Designing Services that protect National Security

The Role

This one’s for a sharp-thinking, insight-driven Lead User Researcher who knows how to turn curiosity into clarity. You’ll be shaping strategies, unlocking user needs, and guiding design decisions with evidence, not guesswork. You’ll take on big, complex problems. The kind that demand more than usability testing and sticky notes. You’ll set the direction, run the studies, and turn findings into stories that land – inside the team and with clients alike. If you know how to connect the dots between user needs and business goals, and you’re at home influencing senior stakeholders and mentoring your peers, let’s talk.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead end-to-end research across product and service lifecycles.
  • Choose the right methods for the question—qual, quant, or a mix of both.
  • Synthesise messy data into clear, compelling insights.
  • Share findings in ways that shift thinking and spark action.
  • Test assumptions early to save time, money, and frustration.
  • Help clients see the value of user-centred design (and how to do it right).
  • Support and mentor researchers and designers around you.
  • Push the craft forward – methods, tools, and team culture.
  • Bake inclusion and accessibility into everything you do.

What We’re After

You’ve done this before – probably 8+ years of it. You’ll have:

  • A portfolio that shows impact, not just activity.
  • Deep knowledge of user research, design thinking, and human-centred design.
  • Experience working in agile teams and service design contexts.
  • Confidence running research solo or as part of a bigger crew.
  • Sharp communication skills – you know how to tell a story with data.
  • Workshop facilitation chops and senior stakeholder confidence.
  • An eye for inclusive research and familiarity with WCAG.
  • Eligibility for SC clearance (UK citizen or equivalent with 5+ years of UK residency).

Bonus points if you’ve:

  • Worked in or with the UK public sector (especially GDS-aligned).
  • Tackled digital services or design systems.
  • Got a background in Psychology, HCI, Anthropology or similar.
