This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys solving complex problems, shaping technical solutions, and helping teams deliver high-quality backend systems in a large-scale environment.
The Role
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you’ll play an important role in designing and delivering backend services that are scalable, resilient and secure. You’ll contribute to architectural discussions, lead code reviews, and work closely with engineers across backend, frontend and platform teams to ensure solutions align with broader engineering standards. You’ll also help guide development practices across the team, ensuring strong engineering discipline around testing, quality and delivery.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and developing robust backend systems and services
- Creating and reviewing technical designs for complex solutions
- Leading code and architecture reviews
- Working closely with DevOps, frontend and other engineering teams
- Improving development workflows and engineering practices
- Supporting and mentoring other engineers when needed
Technology
The environment is centred around a modern backend stack including:
- Java
- Spring Boot
- GitHub and CI/CD pipelines
- JUnit and automated testing frameworks
- SonarQube, Checkmarx and related quality/security tooling
Experience working with TDD / BDD practices and cloud-native architectures is particularly valuable.
What They’re Looking For
- 5+ years’ experience building and maintaining backend systems
- Strong expertise with Java and Spring Boot
- Experience designing scalable and resilient architectures
- Good knowledge of Git-based workflows and CI/CD
- Experience working with cloud platforms (ideally GCP)
- A strong focus on code quality, testing and maintainability
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team
- Experience in regulated environments such as finance or lending would be beneficial but isn’t essential.
If you’re an experienced backend engineer looking to work on large-scale financial systems within a well-established organisation, this is a great opportunity to contribute to a modern engineering environment with strong technical standards.
