Based in the heart of Leamington Spa, Pixel Toys have spent over a decade pushing the capabilities of mobile and VR gaming. We have developed multiple award-winning titles and we’re now excited to be exclusively working on a new game, unlike ANYTHING we’ve done previously! As a forward thinking and innovative studio we are always looking for new technologies and techniques to develop and use in our games and make them even more engaging experiences for our customers.
The Role: Pixel Toys is seeking a technically-minded Audio Engineer to join our core team for a 6-month fixed-term contract, with potential for Permanency. In this pivotal role, you will serve as the primary point of contact for all audio-related matters on a high-profile game project, ensuring that every sonic element is polished and performant ahead of the game’s release. You will be responsible for building out essential audio systems from the ground up and implementing any remaining audio assets to create a truly immersive and complete player experience.
This position is ideal for an experienced Audio Engineer or a highly technical Sound Designer who is eager to dive into the complexities of a major IP and leave a lasting impact on its final quality. As a core member of the development team, you will drive the integration and optimisation of sound effects, music, and voiceovers within a Unity-based mobile environment using FMOD. You will work in close collaboration with game designers, developers, and directors to ensure the audio vision aligns perfectly with the gameplay, ultimately enhancing user engagement through seamless execution.
A significant portion of your time will be dedicated to writing custom C# scripts to develop complex audio features, such as building intuitive "EventPlay" interfaces that allow for efficient implementation and debugging. Beyond the creative aspects of sound, you will be the guardian of technical performance, tasked with enhancing audio pipelines to minimise CPU, memory, and file size footprints without sacrificing quality. This includes designing sophisticated dynamic audio systems that react fluidly to player actions and environmental changes, as well as managing concurrency to prevent audio stuttering. Through rigorous playtesting and quality assurance, you will identify and resolve technical bugs, ensuring that the final product meets our high technical specifications and delivers a world-class auditory experience to our players.
About you: You will join us as a highly technical professional with a strong engineering background, backed by a degree in a related field or equivalent industry experience, as well as a solid portfolio of shipped titles on console or mobile, proving your ability to deliver high-quality audio in a commercial environment. Deeply proficient in the Unity game engine and possessing expert-level knowledge of FMOD middleware, you are also comfortable navigating various Digital Audio Workstations, such as Reaper, Audacity, or Pro Tools, to ensure your assets are prepared to the highest standard. In addition you will bring an advanced understanding of audio signal flow, acoustics, and psychoacoustics to the project, alongside the C# scripting skills necessary to bridge the gap between sound design and game code.
You are a natural problem-solver with a keen attention to detail and a creative approach to technical constraints, as well being are a strong communicator who can align the audio vision with the goals of game designers and programmers alike, ensuring a cohesive and world-class final product.
