Pivt is proud to be supporting a leading organisation within the nuclear and highly regulated engineering sector in the appointment of a Principal Mechanical Engineer. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer to join a multidisciplinary engineering team delivering complex projects across the full project lifecycle, from FEED and detailed design through to commissioning and operational support. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-level technical studies, supporting major engineering programmes, and providing leadership and guidance within a collaborative engineering environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver and manage complex technical studies within multidisciplinary engineering projects
  • Support mechanical process design from conceptual and strategic phases through to detailed design, construction and commissioning support
  • Produce and review engineering deliverables including:
    • Technical notes
    • Substantiation notes
    • Mechanical flow diagrams and flow sheets
    • Mechanical drawings and layouts
    • P&IDs
    • Technical specifications and supplier documentation
  • Support hazard identification and malfunction management activities
  • Undertake technical studies relating to:
    • Mechanical handling systems
    • Heavy mechanical transfer systems
    • Powder transport, milling and compaction processes
    • High active environments and glovebox systems
    • Mechanical dismantling technologies
  • Liaise with internal engineering specialists and wider technical teams to support project delivery
  • Provide technical support during manufacturing, testing, commissioning, operations, maintenance and decommissioning phases
  • Support and mentor junior engineers within the team
  • Maintain strong communication with stakeholders, clients and multidisciplinary teams

Technical Skills & Experience Required

  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in a Mechanical Engineering role
  • Experience delivering engineering design across FEED, detailed design and project delivery phases
  • Strong understanding of engineering within nuclear or other highly regulated industries
  • Experience delivering technical studies involving:
    • Mechanical handling systems
    • Mechanical process systems
  • Knowledge of manufacturing, testing, commissioning, maintenance and decommissioning considerations
  • Experience reviewing technical specifications and supplier documentation
  • Previous experience supporting projects on Sellafield or Magnox sites is desirable
  • Experience leading or supporting engineering teams is advantageous

Qualifications & Training Required

  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution desirable
  • Eligibility to obtain UK security clearance
  • Full right to work in the UK
