Location: London, Manchester, Edinburgh or Glasgow. The role is within Pinsent Masons’ market-leading international Technology, Media & Telecoms (TMT) practice, focusing on data privacy.

The TMT practice handles transactional, dispute and advisory work. The data privacy team sits within TMT and includes over 50 partners, legal directors and lawyers working across a network of offices globally. The team advises on regulatory data protection matters, novel areas of law (e.g., online child safety and AI regulation), and collaborates with the contentious data privacy team on investigations and litigation.

The key elements of the role are to advise on data privacy matters across regulatory compliance, privacy impact assessments, data subject rights, contract negotiations, data protection programmes and international transfers; provide subject-matter expertise on data privacy claims and investigations; contribute to developments in digital regulation (including AI); support business development and client relationship activities; and provide data privacy input in IT/contractual contexts. The role may include some IT/commercial drafting.

Responsibilities

  • Advising on a full range of data privacy matters, including regulatory compliance, privacy impact assessments, data subject requests, contract negotiation, data protection programmes and international data transfers
  • Providing subject-matter expertise on data privacy claims and regulatory investigations
  • Advising on new areas of digital regulation, including AI regulation
  • Assisting with business development to win new clients and develop data workstreams, including attending conferences, writing articles, and engaging with client relationship teams
  • Providing data privacy input in contractual/transactional IT contexts (IT contracts, services agreements, international data transfers, data licensing, data sharing, online terms); may include IT/commercial drafting
  • Supervising junior fee-earners and leading matters with clients, developing relationships across the firm and other teams on large client mandates

Knowledge, Skills And Experience

  • Hands-on experience advising on data protection projects, including EU GDPR/UK GDPR compliance, international data transfers, privacy notices, processor clauses/agreements, and direct marketing/e-Privacy issues
  • Aware of upcoming regulatory changes in data protection

The Candidate Required

The successful candidate will ideally have experience in a large tech/commercial practice, specializing in data protection. They should be technically excellent, commercially aware and enthusiastic about data privacy. Familiarity with fast-paced frontline tech sector environments is preferred but not essential, including possible in-house or secondment experience or work with regulators.
