Role Overview

The Graduate Civil Engineer will assist in the delivery of civil engineering projects, with responsibilities in planning, designing, and coordinating various tasks under the guidance of senior engineers. This is a full-time, on-site role based in Welwyn Garden City, offering opportunities for professional growth within a supportive and collaborative team environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Structural Design & Analysis
    • Assist in the design of structural elements (steel, concrete, timber, masonry) using British Standards, Eurocodes, and relevant industry codes
    • Perform calculations (manual and software-based) for loadings, stresses, deflections, and stability
    • Work with design software and CAD/BIM tools
  • Technical Drawings & Modelling
    • Prepare and review structural drawings and models in collaboration with technicians
    • Coordinate with architects and other engineers to ensure accurate integration of structural systems
  • Site & Inspection Support
    • Attend site visits to inspect works, check compliance with designs, and report findings
    • Assist in resolving site queries and liaise with contractors
  • Report Writing & Documentation
    • Produce technical reports, specifications, and design justifications
    • Maintain clear records of design decisions and project changes
    • Work closely with senior engineers, project managers, and other disciplines
    • Contribute to design meetings and coordination workshops
  • Learning & Professional Development
    • Keep up to date with design standards, materials technology, and sustainability practices
    • Work toward professional qualification (ICE or IStructE) through structured training (e.g., an Initial Professional Development plan)
  • Health, Safety & Sustainability
    • Apply CDM Regulations 2015 principles in designs
    • Consider environmental impact and embodied carbon in material choices

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related field (2:1 or above is often preferred).
  • Understanding of structural analysis and design principles
  • Familiarity with Eurocodes and/or British Standards
  • Basic competence in design software
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
  • Some knowledge of BIM tools (Revit, AutoCAD) is desirable
  • Industrial placement or summer internship experience in a structural/civil engineering setting is beneficial but not always required
  • Willingness to continue own personal development and training as needed
  • Good problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Strong communication skills for liaising with architects, contractors and clients
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
