We are seeking an exceptional Associate / Lead Structural Engineer to join our team and play a pivotal role in delivering technically robust, buildable and elegant structural solutions. This is a senior technical position suited to a highly capable engineer who thrives on solving complex problems, leading by example, and translating ideas into clear, accurate and intelligent drawings.
You will be trusted to take ownership of challenging projects, mentor engineers, and bring clarity and direction where complexity exists. The role requires not just strong engineering judgement, but an ability to think through drawings and use them as a primary tool for problem‑solving and communication.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the structural design and delivery of complex projects from concept through to construction.
- Develop innovative and practical structural solutions, particularly where constraints, legacy structures or site challenges exist.
- Produce and oversee high‑quality structural drawings that clearly resolve technical challenges and guide construction.
- Use drawings proactively as a problem‑solving tool, identifying clashes, buildability issues and design risks early.
- Provide technical leadership and direction to project teams, including mentoring and reviewing the work of engineers and technicians.
- Engage confidently with architects, contractors and clients to develop coordinated and efficient solutions.
- Review and approve calculations, drawings and technical reports to a high professional standard.
- Contribute to design reviews, value engineering exercises and risk assessments.
- Support project planning, resourcing and fee management as appropriate to an Associate level role.
- Maintain a strong awareness of current codes, standards and best practice.
Qualifications:
- Experience Chartered Structural Engineer (CEng MIStructE or MICE) or demonstrably working towards chartership.
- Significant experience delivering structural design within a consultancy or contractor design environment.
- Exceptional problem‑solving ability, particularly when working through complex geometry, load paths, temporary works or construction sequencing.
- Outstanding ability to interpret, develop and interrogate structural drawings.
- Proven experience bringing clarity and solutions to technically challenging projects.
- Strong understanding of construction methods and buildability.
- Confident communicator, able to explain complex ideas clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Experience leading project teams and supporting the development of junior engineers.
- High attention to detail with a pragmatic, solution‑focused mindset.
- Ideally experience in commercial, infrastructure and specialist structures.
- Strong coordination skills using BIM and 3D design tools.
- Experience dealing with contractors on live construction sites.
- Commercial awareness and the ability to balance technical excellence with programme and budget considerations.
