Job Description

Job Title: Teaching Assistant (SEMH Support)
Location: SEND/SEMH School (ages 2-19)
Contract: Temporary to Permanent, 12 working weeks

Location: Portsmouth
Start Date: As soon as possible
Daily Rate: £84-£90

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Teaching Assistant to join our supportive and nurturing team, working with students aged 2 to 19 years who have Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, as well as other Special Educational Needs (SEN). This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of children and young people with complex needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support Students in Class: Assist teachers in delivering engaging, structured lessons and activities that cater to the unique needs of each student, helping them access the curriculum.
  • One-to-One Support: Provide individualised support to students, addressing their academic, social, and emotional needs to help them thrive in the classroom environment.
  • Behaviour Management: Implement positive behaviour management strategies, providing a calm and consistent approach to help students develop their emotional regulation and social skills.
  • Collaborative Working: Work closely with teachers, therapists, and other support staff to develop tailored support plans that align with each student's needs.
  • Encouraging Active Participation: Foster an inclusive and positive atmosphere, encouraging students to participate in lessons and activities while promoting confidence and independence.
  • Adaptability: Be prepared to support students across various age groups (2-19), adapting approaches as necessary to meet their developmental stage and needs.

Candidate Qualities:

  • Patience and Resilience: A calm and composed individual who can remain patient in challenging situations and is committed to fostering a positive learning environment.
  • Energetic and Active: The role requires someone who is physically active, as it involves engaging with students in activities both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Experience with SEMH and SEN: Preferably, candidates will have prior experience supporting children with SEMH needs or other special educational needs in a school or care setting.
  • Team Player: Ability to work well as part of a team, taking direction from teachers and other professionals to ensure the best outcomes for students.
