A highly regarded and supportive independent prep school in East Sussex is seeking a skilled Speech & Language Assistant to join their team from September. The school caters for children aged 2–13 and offers a nurturing, well‑resourced environment with a strong focus on pastoral care, communication, and individual development. This is an excellent opportunity to work within a collaborative and forward‑thinking school community where staff are valued and supported.

This is a long‑term/permanent position supporting a young pupil in Reception on a 1:1 basis. The pupil requires focused support with speech, language, and communication. The role will involve delivering targeted interventions and adapting strategies to support her development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide tailored 1:1 speech and language support
  • Use structured communication methods, including Makaton
  • Support the pupil’s engagement in classroom activities
  • Work closely with the class teacher and external professionals
  • Monitor progress and adapt support strategies accordingly
  • Promote a positive and inclusive learning environment
Requirements
  • Strong knowledge and experience of Makaton – essential
  • Experience supporting children with speech and language needs
  • Background working within a school or early years setting
  • Patient, nurturing, and proactive approach
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
  • Highly reliable
