About the Role
We are looking for a dedicated and experienced SEND specialist to work 1:1 with a wonderful 4-year-old child within an alternative provision setting in Burgess Hill. This is a unique opportunity for someone who is passionate about making a real difference in the life of a child with complex SEND needs. The successful candidate will provide consistent 1:1 support, helping the child to develop their communication, understanding, independence, and emotional regulation. The child is currently attending the provision for approximately 2 hours per day, with the plan for this to gradually increase. During the remaining time, you will support within the primary SEMH class, working alongside other pupils and staff. You will also have dedicated time to create resources, plan strategies, and prepare personalised support materials to help your 1:1 pupil progress.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide nurturing and consistent 1:1 support for a child with complex SEND needs
- Support the development of communication, understanding, and engagement through personalised approaches
- Implement strategies and interventions to help the child access learning and develop skills
- Use visual supports, symbols, communication strategies, and/or Makaton where appropriate
- Support emotional regulation and help the child feel safe and understood
- Recognise triggers and respond positively when the child becomes dysregulated due to difficulties understanding situations
- Encourage independence, confidence, and positive interactions
- Support the child through structured routines and clear communication
- Spend time outdoors as part of the child’s preferred activities and learning approach
- Work closely with the wider team to share observations, strategies, and progress
About You
We are looking for someone who is passionate, patient, and understands the importance of building strong relationships with children with additional needs. You will ideally have:
- Previous experience supporting children with SEND
- Experience working with children with complex needs
- Experience supporting a non-verbal child (essential)
- Understanding of communication difficulties and strategies to support them
- Experience using symbols, visual timetables, PECS, Makaton, or similar communication approaches (desirable)
- The ability to remain calm, consistent, and supportive when a child is dysregulated
- A flexible and creative approach to supporting learning and development
- A genuine passion for helping children reach their potential
Why Apply?
This is a fantastic opportunity for the right person to have a meaningful impact on a young child’s development. You will have the chance to work closely with one child, understand their individual needs, develop tailored strategies, and see the progress you help create. You will be joining a supportive alternative provision team where your ideas, creativity, and expertise will be valued. A few handover sessions before the end of term would be encouraged, allowing you to meet the child, understand their routines, and build a positive relationship before starting in September.
