Occupational Therapist (Part‑time, 0.5 FTE – 19 hours/week) at Pilgrims Hospice, Canterbury, East Kent. Dedicated to supporting patients in palliative care to maximise independence and quality of life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct evidence‑based, complex clinical assessments in nursing/residential homes, hospitals, or patient homes, identifying needs, treatment aims, and goals in collaboration with the patient and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Provide advanced OT services including wheelchair adjustment, therapeutic handling/hoisting, discharge planning, and endorsement of adaptive equipment.
  • Engage patients with challenging behaviour, psychological and psychiatric needs in purposeful treatment programmes.
  • Ensure valid consent and operate within legal frameworks for patients lacking capacity.
  • Utilise recognised outcome and goal‑setting measures to motivate challenging clients.
  • Apply specialist assessment, analytical skills, and expert clinical reasoning to establish accurate diagnoses and prognoses for complex conditions.

Qualifications – Essential

  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy.
  • Member of the College of Occupational Therapists (COT) or recognised equivalent and registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Evidence of relevant continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Full clean driving licence.

Qualifications – Desirable

  • First‑line management/leadership training or MSc/other postgraduate qualification.
  • Clinical supervision course completion.
  • Membership of relevant special interest group.

Experience

  • Post‑qualification experience as a qualified occupational therapist.
  • Experience in palliative or end‑of‑life care settings.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary teams.

Desirable Experience

  • Teaching or staff supervision experience.
  • Experience with clinical audit and outcome measurement.

Skills & Abilities – Essential

  • Excellent written and spoken English communication.
  • Able to communicate sensitively with patients, families, and staff in emotionally challenging situations.
  • Strong organisational and time‑management skills.
  • Proficient therapeutic patient handling, discharge planning, and advanced OT techniques.
  • Clinical leadership and decision‑making skills.
  • Knowledge of biomechanical and neuro‑therapeutic approaches and up‑to‑date adaptive equipment.

Desirable Skills

  • Good presentation and research methodology knowledge.
  • Familiarity with specialist equipment relevant to the post.
