Occupational Therapist (Part‑time, 0.5 FTE – 19 hours/week) at Pilgrims Hospice, Canterbury, East Kent. Dedicated to supporting patients in palliative care to maximise independence and quality of life.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct evidence‑based, complex clinical assessments in nursing/residential homes, hospitals, or patient homes, identifying needs, treatment aims, and goals in collaboration with the patient and the multidisciplinary team.
- Provide advanced OT services including wheelchair adjustment, therapeutic handling/hoisting, discharge planning, and endorsement of adaptive equipment.
- Engage patients with challenging behaviour, psychological and psychiatric needs in purposeful treatment programmes.
- Ensure valid consent and operate within legal frameworks for patients lacking capacity.
- Utilise recognised outcome and goal‑setting measures to motivate challenging clients.
- Apply specialist assessment, analytical skills, and expert clinical reasoning to establish accurate diagnoses and prognoses for complex conditions.
Qualifications – Essential
- Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy.
- Member of the College of Occupational Therapists (COT) or recognised equivalent and registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
- Evidence of relevant continuing professional development (CPD).
- Full clean driving licence.
Qualifications – Desirable
- First‑line management/leadership training or MSc/other postgraduate qualification.
- Clinical supervision course completion.
- Membership of relevant special interest group.
Experience
- Post‑qualification experience as a qualified occupational therapist.
- Experience in palliative or end‑of‑life care settings.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary teams.
Desirable Experience
- Teaching or staff supervision experience.
- Experience with clinical audit and outcome measurement.
Skills & Abilities – Essential
- Excellent written and spoken English communication.
- Able to communicate sensitively with patients, families, and staff in emotionally challenging situations.
- Strong organisational and time‑management skills.
- Proficient therapeutic patient handling, discharge planning, and advanced OT techniques.
- Clinical leadership and decision‑making skills.
- Knowledge of biomechanical and neuro‑therapeutic approaches and up‑to‑date adaptive equipment.
