The course

The Healthcare Innovation Programme is a set of three successive part-time courses designed to fit with the demands of full-time employment.The programme is structured such that students can progress from the PgCert, through thePgDipand then on to theMaster of Studies (MSt)in a flexible manner, enrolling each year for the corresponding award if they choose to progress, with breaks allowed along the way.Itis delivered through a combination of face-to-face sessions requiring attendance in Cambridge, online sessions and self-directed learning.

The objective of the programme is to provide knowledge and understanding of the healthcare system and the technologies applicable to this sector, giving students the expertise and skills needed to innovate successfully in healthcare. The course is suitable for those with a background in medicine, engineering, or a related area. Students will be equipped with the skills necessary to understand how biomedical engineering impacts upon populations, health conditions and clinical outcomes, and learn how to work across the boundaries of engineering, design and healthcare in an effective manner.Alongsidetheir academic studies, students have found thatthey benefit greatly from the interaction with their colleagues, particularly due to the wide range of backgrounds.

The first two years comprise six units:

3)Healthcare Systems Improvement(April)

4)Patient and Population Health(September)

5)Healthcare Technologies II(January)

6)Healthcare Systems Innovation(April)

Candidates who complete the first two yearssuccessfullycanprogressto thethird,MSt,year.Students at this point on the Programme will join a Cambridge college andsubsequentlycanbenefitfromcollege membership for life.The MSt yearconsists of a research projectona topic in the space of scientific, medical, social or business innovation under the general theme of healthcare. This final yearculminates in an assessedresearch dissertation.

Pre-requisites

Applicants are expected to have a good undergraduate degree (a UK first or upper second-classhonours degree, or equivalent) in a subject relevant to the course.Thismay be, or related to, life sciences, medical sciences, computation or engineering. Other backgrounds will be considered. Applicants are expected to devote around 1 full day per week over the duration of the courseandshould be able to read, write and speak English fluently.
