Full‑time position. Salary: £48,290 (inclusive of Specialist Allowance) plus benefits including a pension scheme. Employees will work in a hybrid mode and are expected to work onsite three days per week, with flexible working arrangements supported.

Job Description:
The role is based at UKAEA Culham, Oxfordshire and may involve working shift hours to match the EBW system or MAST‑U experiment operating schedule. Candidates must complete a Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) and DBS check.
MAST‑U is the largest operating spherical tokamak. The Microwave Physicist will develop theoretical models of microwave plasma interaction, and design and implement experiments to test predictions. The role includes analysis tasks, representation of UKAEA at conferences, and collaboration with national and international organisations.
Responsibilities:
- Develop theoretical models for microwave‑plasma interaction, focusing on Electron Bernstein Wave interaction.
- Design, plan, and execute experiments to test theoretical predictions.
- Develop diagnostics specific to microwave‑plasma interaction.
- Support operations that require microwave physics expertise.
- Publish research in peer‑reviewed journals.
- Publicise work internally and at national and international conferences.
- Participate actively in collaborations with external partners.
Qualifications:
- PhD in plasma physics.
- Strong track record in publishing research on microwave‑plasma interaction.
- Experience presenting material at international conferences.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to interact with stakeholders.
