Overview The Guardian Foundation is an independent charity whose purpose is to promote global press freedom and access to liberal journalism. Our vision is a world where people have access to reliable information, from a diverse range of sources, strengthening their ability to hold power to account. The Foundation owns the Guardian News & Media (GNM) Archive, the repository for the records of the Guardian and Observer newspapers. We are looking for a Head of Archive (10 month FTC) to oversee the professional management and care of the GNM Archive, and the provision of access to colleagues and other users, during a period of maternity leave. We\’re looking for someone with proven experience in a similar role, who enjoys working autonomously, with an interest in and knowledge of modern history and current affairs.This post is part-time (3 days a week) and is likely to be partially based in our office in London and partially working from home. The salary range is £42,000-46,000 pro rata.Ideally we would like the successful candidate to join us in early December 2024.Responsibilities Archive management including acquisitions, appraisal, cataloguing, preservation, access and outreachAnswering internal and external enquiries relating to the archive collections and history of the paper and hosting visits from researchersLine management of the Archivist and supervision of volunteers and work experience studentsManagement of the Calm database and digital repositoryMaintenance of the archive\’s websites and online catalogue (Calmview)Organising loans for exhibitionsResponsibility for the archive budget and ordering of archive suppliesGiving talks and tours relating to the archive and the history of the newspapersEnsuring correct environmental conditions and security in the archive storesProgramme evaluation and impact reporting including the preparation of statistics and reports for the Guardian FoundationProgramme planning for the archive, along with the Director of Programmes and Executive DirectorRequirements / Candidate Profile Proven experience in a similar role with autonomous working habitsInterest in and knowledge of modern history and current affairsAbility to manage staff and volunteers, and coordinate with internal teamsExperience with archive management systems and digital repositoriesGood communication skills for providing access and hosting researchers
