An international logistics and transport business is looking for an experienced Head of Health & Safety to lead the health, safety and compliance agenda across a complex, multi-site operation.
This is a senior leadership role for a health and safety professional who can operate strategically while staying close to the operational environment, influence leaders, develop a safety culture, and drive measurable improvements across the organisation.
The Role
Reporting to the senior leadership team, you will take ownership of the organisation's health and safety strategy, ensuring robust standards, systems and behaviours are embedded across all operational sites. You will be responsible for:
- Developing and implementing the overall Health & Safety strategy
- Leading health and safety across a multi-site logistics, transport and warehouse operation
- Providing expert advice and guidance to senior leadership and operational management
- Developing a proactive and positive safety culture across the business
- Ensuring compliance with UK health and safety legislation and regulatory requirements
- Leading audits, inspections, risk assessments and compliance programmes
- Investigating serious incidents and ensuring effective corrective and preventative actions
- Monitoring safety performance through KPIs, trends and management information
- Identifying operational risks and implementing appropriate controls
- Developing and delivering health and safety training and awareness programmes
- Working closely with operational leaders to improve safety standards and behaviours
- Managing external relationships with regulators, insurers and relevant stakeholders
- Supporting business change, new sites, acquisitions and operational projects from a health and safety perspective
- Leading and developing the wider Health & Safety function
About You
We're looking for a senior Health & Safety professional with significant experience within a logistics, transport, aviation, warehousing, manufacturing or similarly complex operational environment. You will ideally have:
- Proven experience at Head of Health & Safety, Group H&S, Senior H&S Manager or equivalent level
- Experience operating across multiple sites
- Strong knowledge of UK health and safety legislation
- NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent professional qualification
- Chartered membership of IOSH or working towards it would be advantageous
- Experience managing audits, risk, incidents and compliance
- Strong understanding of transport, warehouse or other high-risk operational environments
- A proven track record of improving safety culture and reducing incidents
- Strong analytical and reporting capability
- Excellent communication and influencing skills
- The credibility to challenge senior stakeholders and operational leaders when required
The Person
This role requires more than someone who simply manages compliance. We're looking for a visible, credible and commercially aware safety leader who can engage people at every level of the organisation and turn policy into practical action. You'll be comfortable walking the operation, challenging unsafe behaviours, coaching managers and using data to identify where improvements need to be made. Most importantly, you'll have the leadership ability to create a culture where safety is owned by everyone, rather than being seen as the responsibility of the H&S team alone.
The Opportunity
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Head of Health & Safety, Group Health & Safety Manager, Senior H&S Manager or Safety Director looking to take ownership of the safety agenda within a large-scale and operationally complex organisation. If you're an experienced safety leader who wants to make a genuine impact across a national or international operation, I'd be keen to speak with you confidentially.
