About The Role

Job Location: Acorn School, Winkleigh (EX19)

Salary: Between £30,010.50 - £36,250.50 based on 37.5 hours per week

Contract Type: Permanent – Term Time

Imagine starting your day nestled in stunning rural surroundings that inspire creativity, and a deep sense of purpose. You’ll work as part of an experienced and passionate integrated therapy team, dedicated to supporting children and young people with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties. This isn’t just a job; it’s an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of children who need your expertise and care the most.

Your days will be filled with meaningful work. You’ll start each morning with a briefing, sharing updates and celebrating the incredible progress of the children and young people we support. From there, you might deliver a 1:1 therapy session, lead an engaging group activity, or join classroom sessions to offer seamless therapeutic support. Every moment is an opportunity to help a child feel seen, understood, and valued.

Collaboration is at the heart of what we do. When you’re not directly supporting pupils, you’ll play a key role in equipping teaching colleagues with the skills to better support their pupils. You’ll partner with our onsite creative arts therapist to develop therapeutic approaches and attend multidisciplinary meetings with parents, teachers, and external partners to ensure every child receives the tailored care they need.

We’ll support your professional growth with clinical supervision, mentorship, and dedicated time to refine your skills, all within a supportive and nurturing environment. Acorn School is more than a workplace; it’s a community surrounded by natural beauty, where your skills will transform young lives while you thrive in a role that values your expertise and passion.

A day in the life of a Speech and Language Therapist will involve:

  • Taking a trauma informed approach to clinical work. You’ll work with a small caseload of pupils who will have varying Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, Learning disabilities and Autism. You’ll be able to do this through 1:1 support, classroom work and group sessions.
  • Working with the wider team to offer the best support to our pupils, including our onsite creative art therapists, teachers, and teaching assistants, and taking part in Multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Administration. Whilst doing all your great work with the pupils, we’ll need you to keep their records up to date and carry out all the administrative tasks you’d expect to come with this role.

To be a successful Speech and Language Therapist, you’ll need:

  • A recognised Degree in Speech and Language Therapy, along with HCPC Registration and membership with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
  • Some experience of working as a Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Good IT skills – We’ll train you on how to use our systems, but it would help if you had a working understanding of using Microsoft packages like Excel, Word, Outlook and Teams.
  • A full driving licence. Whilst this role is based in a single location, there will be times that you need to attend meetings offsite which would require the use of a vehicle.

If you have experience working within the NHS, the best way for us to describe the level of experience needed for this role would be to consider it a "Band 5" position.

In return for your time, you’ll get:

  • Holidays – You’ll get 28 days annual leave, including public holidays.
  • Pension scheme – Our pension scheme is based on you paying in 5%, and us adding 3%.
  • Learning & Development Opportunities – We provide comprehensive learning opportunities for team members to develop themselves.
  • Discounts – You’ll have access to brilliant discounts through the Blue Light Card and our own employee benefits platform.
  • Wellbeing Support – Your wellbeing is always our priority. You’ll have access to mental health and wellbeing support.
  • Cycle2Work - The cycle to work scheme enables you to buy a bicycle at a discounted rate.
  • DBS – As this role required you to have an enhanced DBS carried out, we will cover this cost.
  • After 12 months service - You’ll also be eligible for our Medicash scheme which covers a wide range of medical, health and wellbeing expenses (Including immediate access to a GP!).
  • You’ll get life assurance paid at x2 your annual salary.

Please note that as part of our safer recruitment processes, successful applicants will be subject to pre-employment checks including an enhanced disclosure and barring service (DBS) check, and online and social media checks, and reference validation.
