The role
As a Senior Data Security Engineer, you’ll lead the design, implementation and optimisation of enterprise data protection solutions across Standard Life. You’ll take hands‑on ownership of Microsoft Purview capabilities, strengthen Data Loss Prevention (DLP) controls, and integrate data security signals across our wider Microsoft security stack.
You’ll work closely with architecture, infrastructure, application and security operations teams to deliver secure, scalable and resilient data security services, aligned to regulatory and control expectations in a financial services environment.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing, implementing and optimising data security controls using the Microsoft Purview suite.
- Developing and tuning Data Loss Prevention (DLP) and Data Access Governance (DAG) policies to protect sensitive information.
- Integrating Purview with Microsoft Defender, Microsoft Sentinel and other security platforms.
- Developing automation and workflows to support data security lifecycle processes.
- Collaborating with technology and business teams to align data protection controls with operational and customer needs.
- Troubleshooting complex data security issues and leading their resolution.
- Supporting audit, risk and regulatory activities with high‑quality documentation and evidence.
- Mentoring junior engineers and contributing to knowledge sharing across the team.

Essential experience:
- Proven experience engineering data security solutions in a complex enterprise environment.
- Hands‑on expertise with the Microsoft Purview stack, including Data Loss Prevention.
- Strong understanding of data security principles, data classification and governance.
- Demonstrable experience designing, implementing and optimising DLP controls.
- Ability to translate regulatory and security requirements into practical, technical solutions.
Desirable:
- Experience using Microsoft Entra ID to support identity‑driven data protection.
- Familiarity with Varonis Data Access Governance.
- Awareness of regulatory and security frameworks such as ISO 27001, NIST, GDPR and the ISF Standard of Good Practice.
