We are currently seeking qualified and experienced Specialist Support Teachers (d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students) to support university students across the UK.
The Role
You will work directly with d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in Higher Education, helping them overcome barriers to learning and develop the skills needed to achieve academic success and independence.
Support may include:
- Identifying disability-related barriers to learning
- Developing personalised learning strategies
- Supporting study skills, organisation and academic independence
- Advising on accessible learning approaches
- Supporting students to engage effectively with lectures, seminars, laboratories, placements and assessments
- Liaising with university disability services where appropriate
- Maintaining professional support records and session reports
- Delivering support remotely and/or face-to-face
Essential Requirements
Applicants must meet the qualification and experience requirements for DSA-funded Specialist Support provision.
Qualifications
Candidates must hold:
- A recognised teaching qualification or equivalent professional education qualification; and
- A recognised specialist qualification in Deaf Education, such as:
- Mandatory Qualification in Teaching Deaf Learners (MQ)
- Teacher of the Deaf qualification
- Equivalent recognised specialist qualification
Experience
You should be able to demonstrate:
- Significant experience working with d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing learners
- Experience supporting students in educational settings
- Understanding of the academic and social impact of deafness and hearing loss
- Knowledge of inclusive teaching and learning practices
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and manage a caseload effectively
Desirable
- Previous experience delivering DSA-funded support
- Experience supporting students within Higher Education
- Knowledge of assistive technology and accessibility tools used by d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing students
- Understanding of SEND and disability legislation
- Lived experience of disability, deafness, hearing loss, neurodivergence, or a long-term health condition
