Job Purpose

The Materials Group supports internal and external customers in the development and manufacturing of current and future diesel and hydrogen products. This includes materials testing and inspection using analytical techniques such as FIB/SEM, surface roughness profilometry, nano-indentation and tribometer work. The student will be an integral part of the materials team and will participate in relevant research and customer-related projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Failure analysis of components from aggravated testing.
  • Mechanical testing activities (e.g., fatigue testing, hardness testing, tribological testing).
  • Materials analysis and measurement (e.g., SEM/EDX, optical microscopy, surface roughness measurement).
  • Chemical testing and analysis (e.g., FTIR, Lubricity, Raman spectrometry).
  • Record test data, analyze results, and produce technical reports for internal and external customers.
  • Conduct literature reviews and provide appropriate summaries.
  • Provide technical assistance to the Materials team.
  • Sample preparation including cutting, polishing, mounting.

Skills

Mandatory

  • Understanding of metallic and non-metallic materials, properties, characterization, and processing from degree course.
  • Ability to apply skills and knowledge learned to date.
  • Good personal and presentation skills for liaison with internal customers.
  • Ability to work methodically and take initiative to improve established processes.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills, self-motivated with the ability to plan and manage own projects.
  • Current IT knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Good written and spoken fluency in English.

Desirable

  • Ability to operate effectively in a multi-national, multi-lingual project environment.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage several tasks simultaneously.
  • Experience using MATLAB is desirable but not essential.

Qualifications / Educational / Experience

Working towards a degree (or equivalent) in Materials Engineering/Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering or related subject.
