We are recruiting on behalf of a welcoming Secondary SEND school in Charlton, Greenwich, seeking an enthusiastic Sports Teaching Assistant / PE Teaching Assistant to support students aged 11–19 with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and complex medical needs. The Role

As a Sports Teaching Assistant / PE Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with the school's PE department to deliver engaging and inclusive physical education lessons and sports activities tailored to students with SEND. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting PE lessons for students with a range of additional needs.
  • Assisting with the delivery of adapted sports and physical activities.
  • Encouraging students to participate, develop confidence, and improve their physical wellbeing.
  • Providing 1:1 and small group support during PE lessons and sporting activities.
  • Assisting with school sports events, enrichment activities, and outdoor learning where appropriate.
  • Working collaboratively with PE teachers, class teachers, therapists, and support staff to ensure all students can access the curriculum safely.
  • Supporting students with personal care and mobility needs where required (training provided if necessary).

Essential Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Previous experience supporting children or young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN) within a school setting.
  • GCSE Maths and English (Grade 4/C or above) or Level 2 qualifications in both Maths and English.

Alternatively, applicants will also be considered if they have either:

  • A recognised qualification or completed training in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) support, or
  • A degree-level qualification.

The Ideal Candidate Will:

  • Have a passion for sport, fitness, and promoting healthy lifestyles.
  • Be energetic, positive, and able to motivate students of all abilities.
  • Have experience coaching, leading sports activities, or supporting PE lessons (desirable).
  • Be patient, resilient, and committed to inclusive education.
  • Be confident working as part of a multidisciplinary team in a specialist SEND environment.
  • Be willing to support students with varying physical, learning, and medical needs.
