Mechanical Engineering Industrial Placement
If you want work experience that really counts, consider a placement with Phillips 66. We are now looking for Mechanical Engineering students to join us for a one-year industrial placement starting in summer 2026. This is a fantastic opportunity to put your theoretical skills into practice and gain invaluable experience within a dynamic business environment.
During your placement, you will work on specific projects alongside our experienced Mechanical Engineers. Should you do well during your time with us, you may be considered for a graduate position upon completion of your degree.
The placement provides an excellent opportunity for the candidates to commence recording experiences that contribute as evidence towards IMechE Chartered Status. We run an approved MPDS Scheme for our graduates and will provide you with a mentor throughout the placement. We will assist with all aspects to ensure your competencies are fully documented so this experience is permitted when you come to register.
Candidates will obtain an appreciation in at least 2 positions from the 4 below:
- Central Engineering Role – Join our team accountable for completion of Maintenance Project Work including equipment and piping repair, modification and replacement. This will provide an opportunity to develop your understanding of pressure vessel/heat exchanger design codes, piping design codes, project engineering & budgeting practices.
- Rotating Machinery Role – Join our team accountable for the mechanical integrity and reliability of machinery repair, modification and replacement, providing an opportunity to improve your knowledge of pumps, compressors, gas and steam turbines used on a refinery.
- Business Team Role – Working as part of a business team, you will gain experience of how maintenance and operations function as one team on a large complex industrial plant. With support you will provide technical assistance to the refinery operations & maintenance teams. Troubleshooting emergent problems on all the Business Unit mechanical assets (pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, pipework etc.)
- Fitness for Service Role – Working with the Lead Fixed Equipment Engineer, who is accountable for the assessment of mechanical defects found through our continued inspection programs, process hazard analysis programs and equipment repairs and upgrades. This includes technical hand calculations as well as use of modern software applications across all types of fixed equipment located on a refinery (Heaters, Storage Tanks, Pressure Vessels, Piping, Heat Exchangers). Ultimately this department ensures the safe and reliable operation of the refinery.
Qualifications and Education
- You are a motivated and proactive engineering student who relishes a challenge, as well as having an interest in Mechanical Engineering in the energy sector.
- Working towards a minimum 2:1 in a Mechanical Engineering discipline degree (recent graduates also considered)
- Good engineering/technical knowledge
- We really value previous work experience gained through industrial summer placements, internships, and work experience. Make sure you tell us about this if you have it, particularly where you have developed your team-working, organisation, and problem-solving skills.

Our Process

Our assessment days will be held at our Humber Refinery and may include an overnight stay and dinner with experienced engineers (reasonable travel expenses and overnight accommodation will be provided).
The Humber Refinery is playing its part of the UK’s decarbonisation efforts.
As a part of the UK Government’s net zero ambition, the Humber Refinery is on a journey to become the Refinery of the Future. With proposed plans for a number of projects including to implement a first‑of‑a‑kind FCC carbon capture project, the Humber Refinery is part of Humber Zero, a world‑scale concept to reduce UK industry carbon emissions, saving up to 8 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030 from the Immingham industrial area.
On top of this, the Humber Refinery is the UK’s only refiner producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel at scale. It is also the only European facility producing battery anode coke, which forms a critical component for lithium‑ion batteries used in electrical vehicles and in consumer electronics. Our current production of battery anode coke is equivalent to placing 1.3 million EVs on the road every year, and we are developing multiple projects to expand this capability.
