If successful, your time will be spent gaining valuable experience working within the laboratory environment and also outside on the plant. The two main areas of responsibility are intermediate and finished products testing, both gases and liquids, using a variety of instrumentation in the Gas Chromatography laboratory and also coker feedstock analysis on the black oils bench. In addition to sample analysis, chromatograph interpretation, and troubleshooting, the role also involves sample collection both on and offsite.

You will be required to work a 12-hour shift pattern which will include nights and weekend working, supporting refinery operations 24/7.

Qualifications and Education

  • Working towards a minimum 2:2 in Chemistry or science subject and completed at least 2 years of study.
  • Good technical chemistry knowledge.
  • It is essential that applicants hold a full driving licence.
  • We value previous work experience gained through industrial summer placements, internships, and work experience. Make sure you tell us about this if you have it, particularly where you have developed your team‑working, organisation, and problem‑solving skills.

What are we looking for?

  • Good communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Able to apply technical knowledge to real‑life challenges and create innovative solutions.
  • Ability to work in multi‑disciplinary teams.
  • Good safety awareness.
  • Self‑organising to meet deadlines and deliver on projects.
  • Confidence to work on your own initiative.

What Phillips 66 can offer you:

  • Ability to integrate and learn from experienced professionals.
  • Opportunity to become part of our Early Careers Network and take part in fun, informative and social activities.
  • Free daily lunch whilst working on site.
  • Free accommodation for the first 6 weeks of your placement so you can get to know the area and other students.
  • Free access to our onsite gym.
  • Competitive Salary ranging between ÂŁ26,000 – ÂŁ29,500 per annum pro rata dependent on level of study completed.
  • In addition to salary, a shift payment of ÂŁ11,550 will also be paid.

Our Process:

In order to be considered for this position you must complete the entire application process, which includes answering all pre‑screening questions and providing your eSignature on or before the requisition closing date of 2nd November 2025.

Applications will be reviewed periodically throughout the advertising window. However, we may invite candidates who pass our screening process to selection events on a first‑come, first‑served basis and making offers of employment to people who are successful at those events, therefore we advise that you apply as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Our assessment days will be held at our Humber Refinery and may include an overnight stay and dinner with experienced engineers (reasonable travel expenses and overnight accommodation will be provided).

As a part of the UK Government’s net zero ambition, the Humber Refinery is on a journey to become the Refinery of the Future. With proposed plans for a number of projects including to implement a first‑of‑a‑kind FCC carbon capture project, the Humber Refinery is part of Humber Zero, a world‑scale concept to reduce UK industry carbon emissions, saving up to 8 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030 from the Immingham industrial area.

On top of this, the Humber Refinery is the UK’s only refiner producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel at scale. It is also the only European facility producing battery anode coke, which forms a critical component for lithium‑ion batteries used in electric vehicles and in consumer electronics. Our current production of battery anode coke is equivalent to placing 1.3 million EVs on the road every year, and we are developing multiple projects to expand this capability.

We are on an exciting journey, are you ready to join us?
