The safe, accurate and efficient calibration of torque and force equipment in the laboratory and at customer locations.
Purpose of the Role:
- To carry out accurate, traceable and timely calibration of torque and force equipment in accordance with approved procedures, standards and customer requirements.
- To apply practical mechanical engineering skills to the inspection, setup, adjustment, testing and calibration of customer equipment.
- To support a safe, efficient and customer-focused laboratory service while developing competence across additional calibration disciplines where required.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform laboratory and on-site calibration of torque tools, torque transducers, force measuring equipment, load cells and associated equipment within authorised areas of competence.
- Inspect equipment on receipt, identify damage or defects, select suitable standards and fixtures, and complete calibrations safely and efficiently.
- Record results accurately and produce clear, technically valid calibration certificates and supporting records.
- Maintain a safe, clean and controlled working environment and comply with Company health, safety, quality and environmental requirements.
- Communicate professionally with customers, colleagues and managers regarding technical requirements, equipment condition, progress and any delays or concerns.
Daily Tasks
- Set up and operate torque and force calibration systems, reference standards, fixtures and mechanical handling equipment in accordance with approved methods and safe systems of work.
- Use mechanical engineering knowledge to assess equipment condition, alignment, fit and function, completing authorised adjustment or fitting work and escalating defects or technical issues when required.
- Complete job records, calculations and calibration certificates accurately, checking results for consistency and immediately reporting unusual readings, equipment failures or nonconforming work.
- Protect and correctly identify customer equipment, and complete routine checks on reference standards, fixtures and tools to confirm they remain suitable for use.
- Plan assigned work to achieve productivity and turnaround targets while maintaining safety, technical quality and good laboratory housekeeping.
- Participate in training, competency assessments, audits and improvement activities, developing capability in other calibration disciplines as required.
- Travel to customer sites and other Company locations when required, representing CTS professionally and following site rules and risk controls.
- Use good manual dexterity and hand–eye coordination to handle, assemble, adjust and position precision equipment, components and calibration fixtures safely and accurately.
*** Note this role is of a physical nature and requires calibration weights to be lifted. These can be up to 20kg in weight.
Knowledge & Experience
- A strong practical mechanical background gained through mechanical engineering, machining, CNC milling, toolmaking, fitting, maintenance or a similar hands-on technical environment.
- Experience using mechanical measuring equipment, interpreting engineering drawings, working to tolerances and following controlled technical instructions.
- Previous calibration or metrology experience, particularly in torque or force, is desirable but not essential where the candidate has suitable mechanical aptitude and can complete structured training.
- An understanding of measurement traceability, uncertainty, quality systems or BS EN ISO/IEC 17025 would be advantageous.
- Good numerical, practical problem-solving and computer skills, with the ability to produce accurate records and recognise results that require further investigation.
- A relevant mechanical engineering, machining, manufacturing or technical qualification is desirable; equivalent practical industry experience will also be considered.
- A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to customer and Company locations are required.
Personal Attributes
- Practical, methodical and comfortable working with mechanical equipment, tools and precision measurement systems.
- Careful and quality-focused, with a strong commitment to safe working and accurate results.
- Reliable, organised and able to work independently or as part of a technical team.
- Willing to learn, accept technical guidance and develop competence across a range of calibration activities.
