Our home employs a Wellbeing and Activity Coordinator, who is responsible for getting to know each of our residents individually and provide them with a range of opportunities to engage with activities that are meaningful to them personally. The idea is to support residents to have the best quality of life possible and most of all to be happy living in our homes.
ABOUT THE ROLE
To be a Wellbeing & Activity Coordinator, you will need to be well organised, creative, and proactive. Like many jobs, no day is the same; one day you could be throwing a themed event to celebrate summer and the next day you could be in a dementia-friendly cinema watching the Wizard of Oz or playing card games with the residents.
PLANNING YOUR WEEK
Your main role within a care setting is to provide activities that benefit the wellbeing of residents, ensuring you focus on their emotional, intellectual, spiritual and physical wellbeing. Each Wellbeing & Activity Coordinator brings their own ideas to the role and will find their own unique strength. Some people are great at creating quizzes, conducting craft sessions and others excel at stimulating physical exercise through gardening or other outdoor activities. It is important to plan a diverse activity week; your weekly planned programme should help you construct this.
USING YOUR LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
Behind the scenes, you are organising events and reaching out to the local community to ensure that residents don’t lose touch with groups and friends that they enjoyed locally before coming to live in the care home. The phrase 'it's not what you know it's who you know' is fundamental to this job role and having a little notebook with you at times can often be beneficial. Even if you do not know the local area well, you will begin to collect local contacts and resources such as schools, churches, and charities that make your job even more rewarding.
GO WITH THE FLOW!
There is never a dull day as a Wellbeing & Activity Coordinator. Planned activities don’t always go the way you wanted, so you have to be proactive and think on your feet. Sometimes residents decide that they don’t want to join in at the last minute, but it helps to ask people what they want to do instead. Good communication skills are essential, and you need to be flexible and go with the flow some days. Other days you can be surprised when a successful one-to-one or group session brings tangible benefits for a resident.

OTHER DUTIES
Kingsfield is a bustling working Residential Care Home and things may not always go to plan. It is vital that the Wellbeing & Activities Coordinator is flexible and adaptable to ensure that all our residents' care and support needs are always met. The Wellbeing & Activities Coordinator is often the first person visitors meet at the front door and it is vital that you ensure that all our visitors, family, friends, employees and other professionals are made to feel welcome, offered refreshments and have a great first impression of the home, service and environment. It is especially important that activities focus on the wellbeing of our residents and promote their independence; however, this must always be in a safe, clean and presentable environment. At times, the Wellbeing & Activities Coordinator may have to assist residents with drinks, snacks and to access the toilet facilities.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
The Health & Safety of our residents is paramount. The Wellbeing & Activities Coordinator must ensure that the environment always meets and conforms to all Health & Safety Policies and Procedures. All activities, whether on a one-to-one, small group or large groups basis, should always adopt measures to minimise and reduce the risks of falls, trips or slips. This is particularly important during group activities and when managing side tables, walking sticks, frames, and other mobility aids. Activities where hazardous items are used, for example paint, small pieces, sharp objects should always be supervised and the care and support needs of everyone taking part in the activity should be considered. Residents should not be left unattended unless it is safe to do so.
HOURS OF WORK
Although the normal working hours for a Wellbeing & Activities Coordinator are Monday to Friday, on occasion you may want to alter your hours to meet a particular event, activity, or resident outing. These changes should be discussed in advance with the manager during the planning stages of the activity or event.
