A position has become available for an Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager, covering the companies two manufacturing sites, Sedgefield, County Durham and Keighley, West Yorkshire. Working Monday to Friday the role will require attending both sites each week. Reporting to the Operations Director this autonomous position will be a challenging role requiring a person committed to ensuring colleagues have a safe and healthy working environment, who can adapt and be flexible in managing their duties.
Main Purpose
The EHS Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining health, safety, and environmental programmes to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and promote a safe and healthy workplace. This role involves leading initiatives to minimise risks, prevent accidents, and ensure environmental sustainability within the manufacturing operations.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Act as the Company’s lead professional and subject‑matter expert for Environment, Health & Safety, providing competent advice and guidance across both manufacturing sites.
- Develop, implement and maintain the Company’s EHS strategy, policies and systems to ensure full compliance with all relevant health, safety and environmental legislation, standards and best practice.
- Lead and embed a proactive EHS culture, promoting safe behaviours, environmental responsibility and continuous improvement across the business.
- Ensure robust risk assessment, safe systems of work and standard operating procedures are in place, regularly reviewed, and effectively implemented.
- Plan and deliver a programme of site inspections, audits and compliance checks, including fire safety, statutory inspections and environmental audits.
- Lead and investigate accidents, incidents and near‑misses, undertaking root cause analysis and ensuring effective corrective and preventative actions are implemented.
- Hold full accountability for environmental compliance, including waste management, pollution prevention, permit compliance, contractor controls and liaison with external bodies where required.
- Manage and maintain accurate EHS records, data and performance metrics, ensuring clear, meaningful reporting to senior leadership and the Board.
- Design and deliver EHS training, inductions and toolbox talks, ensuring competency is maintained and training records are accurate and up to date.
- Chair Health, Safety and Environmental meetings, producing clear actions and ensuring accountability and follow‑through.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of changes in EHS legislation and guidance, ensuring timely implementation and communication across the business.
- Exercise authority to stop unsafe work where necessary and elevate EHS concerns appropriately to senior leadership.
- Work collaboratively with operational teams to improve performance while maintaining independence and professional credibility.
The role requires a high level of professional judgement, autonomy and the ability to influence at all levels of the organisation.
Essential Qualifications
- NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety (or equivalent Level 6 qualification)
- Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH) or working towards chartership with demonstrable progress
- NEBOSH General Certificate (covered if Diploma held, but often still referenced)
- NEBOSH Environmental Certificate or demonstrable equivalent environmental compliance experience
- Proven experience managing Health, Safety and Environmental compliance within a multi‑site operational or manufacturing environment
Desirable / Advantageous Qualifications
- IEMA Certificate or Practitioner (PIEMA)
- Environmental Management Systems (EMS) implementation experience
- Risk assessment & accident investigation accreditation (e.g. Root Cause Analysis, ICAM, TapRooT)
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering or related discipline
