The Head of Assets is a senior strategic leader responsible for the full lifecycle management of the company’s refrigerated van fleet. This includes the acquisition and specification of vehicles, in-life optimisation and performance oversight, safety and regulatory compliance (including recall management), and the effective disposal or sale of assets at the end of their operational life. The role drives cost-efficient asset utilisation, extends residual value, mitigates risk, and supports commercial and operational objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Asset Acquisition & Ordering: Lead the strategic planning and procurement of new refrigerated vehicles, ensuring vehicles are specified to customer and operational requirements, regulatory standards, and budget constraints. Manage relationships with OEMs, dealers and internal stakeholders to secure optimal terms, delivery schedules, and pricing. Oversee order placement, tracking, and delivery processes to align with fleet demand and utilisation forecasts. Ensure the accurate data input of the asset on the in-house systems and management of the fleet asset register. Implement and monitor performance metrics and utilisation reporting across the refrigerated fleet to identify opportunities for improvement, asset relocation and cost reductions. Utilise telematics, data analytics, and asset lifecycle systems to optimise operational performance, minimise downtime, and enhance whole-life value. Develop and maintain robust maintenance and service frameworks to support vehicle reliability, safety, and compliance with legal and industry standards.
- Safety and Compliance: Lead the identification and management of safety recalls, regulatory changes, and compliance requirements relevant to refrigerated commercial vehicles in the UK. Partner with internal teams and external bodies to ensure timely resolution of safety issues and implementation of corrective actions. Champion best practices in operator licence compliance, MOT schedules, driver safety, and asset risk management.
- End-of-Life Asset Disposal & Sale: Establish and execute strategies for the efficient and profitable disposal or remarketing of end-of-life vehicles, maximising residual value and minimising holding costs. Manage remarketing activities, including pricing strategy, sales channels, and commercial negotiations. Provide leadership in forecasting and planning for asset replacement cycles and capital expenditure requirements. Provide strategic oversight and governance for all asset management activities with a team of 5 colleagues, ensuring clear accountability and alignment with business goals. Work closely with senior leadership to inform business planning, budget setting, and operational decision-making. To effectively manage department staff through assessments, target setting, absence management and Appraisals. Build and sustain collaborative relationships with cross-functional teams, including operations, procurement, finance, compliance, and customer service.
Job Requirements: Skills, competences & Experience
- Proven experience in fleet or asset management, ideally within commercial vehicle operations, logistics, or related sectors.
- Strong commercial acumen, negotiation skills, and understanding of vehicle procurement and disposal processes.
- Demonstrable ability to use data analysis and telematics to support driving operational improvements.
