Position duties include planning, organizing, and providing instruction in English that meet state and federal standards. It also includes coaching and assisting content teachers to achieve instructional objectives, assisting special population students with achieving established goals, assisting school staff with communication between school and home, and preparing/maintaining files and records.
Essential Duties
- Plan, organize, and provide instruction in English that meet state and federal standards.
- Provide instruction that is consistent and coordinated with the district/school instructional program so as to ensure that students meet and exceed learning targets.
- Develop and deliver lesson plans that utilize a broad range of appropriate teaching techniques and strategies.
- Adapt curriculum to provide individual, small group, and/or remedial instruction as to meet the needs of individual students and subgroups of students.
- Maintain complete and accurate records of student progress and evidence of growth and progress.
- Assist teachers with instructional activities.
- Assist students to reinforce material already presented through special efforts and repetitions; preparing and maintaining files and reports.
- Assist classroom teacher(s) in performing specific duties as assigned or undertaking specialized tasks.
- Assist in providing individual and small-group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils' intellectual abilities.
- Prepare instructional materials; read to students.
- Assist the classroom teacher in creating an environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
- Help plan daily and long-range lessons and classroom activities.
- Instruct students on use of computer software; prepare lesson plans.
- Help students with problem solving and language skills.
- Alert the teacher to special needs of individual students.
- Administer academic and language assessments for the purpose of evaluating student progress for meeting academic learning targets and progress in language acquisition.
- Score required tests for reading and mathematics and enter data into computer.
- Check students' work for compliance with teacher's instructions.
- Assist students with reading, spelling and handwriting skills.
- Help maintain individual records for each student.
- Collect and display suitable material for educational displays; prepare displays; decorate classroom.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Assist in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
- Help maintain order in the classroom; monitor students to keep them on tasks.
- Perform related tasks as required.
Qualifications
- General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in classroom teaching; ability to maintain confidential files and information and to compile reports; ability to deal effectively with students and teachers; skill in the use of classroom and instructional equipment; ability to operate standard office, word and data processing equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students, and associates.
- Spanish as native/second language preferred.
- Experience working with ESL students and parents a must.
- Minimum Qualifications Education: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.
- Certification and Licensure Eligible for Virginia Endorsement in English as a Second Language.
- Experience working with children is preferred.
