The Attendance Coach is a newly created, data‑centric role providing a dedicated, unrelenting focus on student attendance and early pastoral intervention. Acting as the primary frontline resource for immediate absence follow‑up and early intervention, you will follow up on student absences immediately to identify internal and external barriers to education. Through a high‑visibility day‑one response, you will ensure every absence is accounted for, directly linking rigorous attendance tracking with the college’s proactive safeguarding culture. By taking ownership of initial, low‑level attendance barriers and liaising directly with parents, you will relieve the administrative burden from teaching staff and allow the Student Wellbeing Services to focus on complex safeguarding needs. You will play a vital role in ensuring students are supported to achieve the college's overall attendance benchmark of 95%.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Act as the immediate primary frontline resource for daily absence follow‑up, identifying and tracking diverse barriers to education starting from a student's first day of absence.
  • Carry out targeted home visits where appropriate, utilising a proactive approach to investigate persistent absence, engage directly with families, and identify external barriers to education.
  • Work with department administrators and curriculum staff to regularly monitor and track student absence/lateness; liaise with parents/carers, and outside agencies where appropriate to ensure students are supported to achieve an overall attendance rate of 95% across their study programmes.
  • Utilise the data management systems and reports, ensuring clear and accurate data is available for curriculum teams to access to maximise a collaborative approach to improving student attendance and retention.
  • Conduct proactive monitoring of student social spaces and communal areas across the campus, engaging with students to ensure they are directed to their timetabled sessions promptly and promoting a culture of excellent punctuality and attendance.
  • Liaise extensively with parents and carers to ensure students are supported to achieve an overall attendance rate of 95%, with specific oversight to ensure English and Maths attendance remains above 80%.
  • Remove the administrative burden of attendance tracking from teaching staff, working collaboratively with curriculum administrators and the Curriculum Administration team (where capacity allows).
  • Take responsibility for handling initial, low‑level barriers to attendance so that the Wellbeing team is freed up to focus exclusively on high‑level safeguarding and complex clinical needs.
  • Utilise data management systems to keep a daily and weekly check on attendance and punctuality patterns, ensuring clear and accurate data is available to maximise a collaborative approach to improving student retention.
  • Upon identifying complex safeguarding or mental health concerns during attendance follow‑ups, refer students to the central Safeguarding and Student Wellbeing Services.
  • Attend meetings with curriculum managers and the Attendance Group Lead to discuss student attendance, review strategies for persistent absence, and implement interventions for vulnerable groups.
  • Active involvement in IEG student recruitment activities, including Open Days, taster days, enrolment, and student induction.

Desirable

  • Engender a strong team ethos, which promotes a positive, can‑do, and innovative attitude across the department.
  • Maintain excellent standards of customer care and provide a flexible and responsive service to all users.
  • Contribute to the development of the IEG Group’s Strategic Aims, Objectives, and Values.
  • Perform duties to a high standard and ensure that quality assurance and improvement processes are implemented successfully across the College, particularly those relating to your role.
  • Participate in and make an appropriate contribution to the College’s planning and review processes.
  • Undertake continuing professional development as appropriate, which means taking a full part in the IEG staff development program, including departmental and role‑specific training, and the IEG appraisal process.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and taking a shared responsibility to promote the welfare and a safe environment for children, young people, and vulnerable adults learning within the group.
  • To carry out such duties as may be determined from time to time within the general scope of the post.

Benefits

  • 37 days annual leave, plus Christmas close down.
  • A supportive and collaborative working environment.
  • Opportunities for professional development.
  • Access to the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.
  • On‑site benefits and facilities, including a gym, free on‑site parking and on‑site nursery (Peterborough campus only).
  • Work closely with a highly dedicated team.

Safeguarding Statement

IEG is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children, young people and any vulnerable groups within the college community and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Successful candidates will be subject to a thorough vetting process which includes an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
