Your Impact
This is more than just a legal advisory role – it\’s an opportunity to build something from the ground up. As our first dedicated Employment Lawyer, you\’ll have the unique chance to:
- Shape practice from day one – establish processes, policies, and best practices that will define how the Council approaches employment law
- Build strategic partnerships – work closely with HR leadership to influence policy development and ensure legal compliance is embedded in all people strategies
- Be the go-to expert – become the trusted advisor that senior leaders turn to for complex employment law guidance

What You\’ll Do
- Provide authoritative legal advice on the full spectrum of employment law matters, from day-to-day queries to complex tribunal cases
- Represent the Council at Employment Tribunals and employment-related hearings
- Partner with HR teams to develop policies, procedures, and training that minimize legal risk
- Draft and review employment contracts, policies, and settlement agreements
- Lead on complex employment investigations and disciplinary matters
- Advise on TUPE transfers, restructures, and organizational change
- Stay ahead of legislative changes and their impact on Council operations
What We\’re Looking For
- Qualified Solicitor with current practicing certificate, Barrister, or Fellow of CILEx
- Substantial experience in employment law with a proven track record of tribunal representation
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to provide clear, practical advice to non-legal colleagues
- Excellent communication skills – you\’ll be presenting to senior officers, elected members, and external stakeholders
- Strategic mindset with the ability to see the bigger picture and influence policy development
- Collaborative approach and ability to build effective working relationships across the organization
