We are looking for an Apprentice Civil Engineer with an interest in Utility Engineering and the water Industry to join our Water business division who are a national provider of infrastructure and non-infrastructure water and wastewater services to UK water utility companies. This role is based in the integrated design team of Peter Duffy Ltd.

Day to day you will play a key part in the delivery of water and wastewater infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects, supporting designs from initial concept through to detailed design, construction and commissioning. You will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, practical design solutions that meet client and project requirements. Some of your key responsibilities will include:

  • Assist our Engineers in preparing and developing design solutions at various stages of a project, supporting Design Engineering activities related to civil design and survey information.

  • Produce design documentation including reports, specifications, calculations, and cost estimates. Attend client meetings when required and review the work of colleagues to ensure accuracy and quality.

  • Assisting with many of the admin tasks faced by our experienced Engineers.

  • Preparation of land entry drawings and liaison with Clients/Customers.

  • Assist in conducting site surveys, develop detailed survey plans for external suppliers, and produce comprehensive reports based on the findings.

  • Work closely with other members of the design team to maintain the consistency, accuracy, and integrity of the overall design.

  • Attend engineering events and industry expos where appropriate, helping to identify and adopt the latest technologies and industry best practices.

  • Follow company quality management procedures in accordance with ISO 9001 standards.

  • Support survey activities, including data review and evaluation, and assist in the development of Pre-Construction Information (PCI) provided by the client.

  • Accept mentoring by senior members of the design team.

As an Apprentice with United Infrastructure, you’ll be given a real job from day one where you will gain hands-on industry experience, and the knowledge required to achieve a nationally recognised qualification. In order to fully develop in your role, you will be enrolled onto the Level 6 Civil Engineer degree apprenticeship qualification with training partner Leeds Beckett University. You will be given dedicated time each week to study towards your qualification, this could be delivered remotely, or day release, but you will fully supported through a variety of methods such as lectures, learning materials, and one-to-one support from your tutor or coach.

Entry Requirements

  • A level 3 qualification such as A Levels, T Level, or equivalent, with a minimum equivalent of 96 UCAS Tariff points*

  • 5 GCSEs at Grade 9-4/A*-C including English and Mathematics

  • Good IT skills and able to use Microsoft Office packages e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel etc.

  • Good organisation, time management and communication skills.

  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with members of the design team, as well as internal and external stakeholders.

  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, with a proactive, positive, and solution-focused approach to work.

  • Show a willingness to learn, develop, and continually improve your skills, while embracing innovative and forward-thinking ideas.

  • Driving licence, or be working towards achieving this.

*Advanced entry is available to candidates with a suitable Level 4 Civil Engineering qualification such as an apprenticeship or HNC.

Preferred skills, ideally, you will also have:

  • CAD and drawing skills using an array of CAD based platforms.

  • knowledge of using industry-standard design software such as InfoDrainage, AutoCAD, Revit, and Civil 3D.

You must also be available to start full-time work by September 2026 and have:

Please note, as this is an apprenticeship programme, in order to be eligible to apply you must not already have an equivalent level or higher qualification in the occupational area, or significant work experience.

Upon successful completion of your programme, you will achieve:

  • Level 6 Civil Engineer Degree Apprenticeship.

  • BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering

  • Eligible for apply for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) membership.
