Position Purpose: The purpose of this position is to provide excellent medical care to Vetco Total Care patients and outstanding customer care to their owners. Veterinary Assistants represent the mission and values to all clients and serve as the gateway for technical and customer support in the hospital.
Essential Job Functions:
- Greet clients and patients, escort them into exam rooms, obtain weight and vital signs, and document findings in the EMR.
- Assist doctors with routine and emergency appointments, surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia under the supervision of a veterinarian or credentialed veterinary technician.
- Perform patient restraint, collect and process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications as directed, and maintain the electronic medical record.
- Schedule appointments, provide client education, relay test results, and update client/patient records.
- Assist in anesthesia preparation, monitoring, recovery, and discharge, ensuring patient safety throughout.
- Administer inâhospital treatments, including injectable, oral, and intravenous fluid therapy, and keep patients clean, fed, and hydrated when directed.
- Assist in training new staff and disseminate knowledge as required by the HOM/HLOD.
- Maintain a clean hospital environment and perform regular cleaning according to the maintenance schedule.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Provide backup phone and frontâdesk support as needed.
Nature of Supervision: In all activities related to patient care, the incumbent will receive direct supervision from veterinarians and the Veterinary Technician. Overall supervision is provided by the HOM/HLOD or shiftâsupervising technician.
Education / Experience Preferred: at least 1 year of previous experience in veterinary practice or comparable animalâcare experience. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Compassionate, professional demeanor in emotional and stressful situations. Telephone and computer proficiency. Team player eager to learn new techniques and contribute creative ideas.
Work Environment: Work is conducted in the Veterinary Hospital and requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 lbs.) and standing for long periods. The role involves frequent direct contact with clients and their pets.
