Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Speech and Language Therapist to join our small, growing paediatric team, delivering high-quality assessment, diagnosis, and therapy for children and young people with speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN). The role involves working across a variety of settings, including schools, nurseries, clinics, and homes, supporting children with a range of developmental speech, language, and social communication difficulties.

We are a child-centred, inclusive service committed to neuroaffirming, evidence-based practice, and to supporting professional development.

Community based across the Midlands Current school contracts based in Hinckley, Burbage & Rugby.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Duties:

  • Assess, diagnose, and manage speech, language, and communication needs in children, using appropriate standardised and informal assessment tools.
  • Develop and implement individual therapy plans tailored to children's communication needs.
  • Deliver therapy in individual and group settings across various environments (schools, nurseries, clinics, and homes) and measure and evaluate outcomes.
  • Support children with complex communication needs, including those with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), and speech sound disorders.
  • Work collaboratively with parents, carers, teachers, and other professionals to embed strategies into everyday routines.
  • Provide advice, training, and coaching to families and education staff.
  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate clinical records in accordance with RCSLT professional standards and service policies.
  • Contribute to legal documents such as Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), Individual Education Plans (IEPs), and Annual Reviews.
  • Demonstrate clinical effectiveness through the use of evidence-based practice and outcome measures.
  • Share information appropriately with clients, carers, and professionals, observing current data protection guidelines.

Multi-Disciplinary and Team Working:

  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Liaise with healthcare and education professionals (e.g., Paediatricians, Health Visitors, SENCOs, and Local Authorities) to ensure a holistic approach.
  • Contribute to and attend multi-agency meetings, including EHCP assessments and SEND reviews.

Professional Development and Supervision:

  • Participate in regular supervision with a senior Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Actively engage in continuing professional development (CPD), including training courses, shadowing opportunities, and peer support.
  • Maintain professional standards in line with HCPC and RCSLT guidelines.

Person Specification:

Essential Criteria:

  • BSc (Hons) / MSc in Speech and Language Therapy (or equivalent).
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Membership of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).
  • Knowledge of a range of paediatric speech, language, and communication disorders.
  • Commitment to evidence-based practice and ongoing professional development.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a wider team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to produce detailed reports, intervention plans, and treatment programmes.
  • Supportive of a neuroaffirming approach in practice and recommendations.

Desirable Criteria:

  • 1 year's experience working with children.
  • Experience of working with Autistic children and/or those with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
  • Experience of using alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) strategies (e.g., Makaton, visuals, communication devices).
  • Knowledge of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) legislation.
  • Experience of working in school or community settings.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritise workload, both clinical and non-clinical.
  • Emotional maturity to handle sensitive and difficult conversations.
  • Ability to assess and deliver therapy to children with diverse needs.
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to provide accessible verbal and written advice and programmes to parents, carers, and professionals.

Additional Information:

  • The post-holder will be required to undergo an Enhanced DBS check.
  • A valid UK driving licence and access to a vehicle is required for community-based work.
