The Opportunity
This senior civil engineer position offers the opportunity to lead technical delivery across projects ranging from small local highway improvements through to large residential and commercial developments, including multi-million-pound schemes. The role will also contribute to the continued growth of a strategically important sector of the business, with genuine scope to influence standards, mentoring, and delivery performance. The team has a strong technical focus on highways and drainage with projects ranging from small-scale local improvements through to multi-million-pound developments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the design and technical delivery of highways and infrastructure projects from concept through to detailed design.
- Produce compliant highway layouts including junction design (roundabouts, signalised junctions, ghost islands and priority junctions).
- Develop vertical and horizontal alignments, drainage strategies and flood risk assessments.
- Deliver Section 278 and Section 184 detailed designs and manage technical approvals.
- Ensure designs comply with current legislation, local authority requirements and national standards.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers and technicians.
- Manage workloads to meet programme, quality and budget requirements.
- Prepare technical reports and support fee proposal development where required.
- Liaise with clients, local authorities, National Highways and other stakeholders.
Candidate Profile:
- Degree-qualified in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
- Typically 8+ years’ post-graduate experience within a consultancy environment.
- Strong experience in highways design, junction design and 3D modelling.
- Proven delivery of S278, S184, S38 and S104 schemes.
- Solid understanding of National Highways and local authority approval processes.
- Working knowledge of national design standards including DMRB, Manual for Streets, LTN 1/20 and NRSWA.
- Proficient in AutoCAD, Civils 3D, Vehicle Tracking, KeyLINES/SIGN/POST and drainage software (Flow / MicroDrainage).
- Experience managing projects, programmes and technical delivery.
- Able to mentor and develop junior engineers.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Chartered or working towards Chartership (ICE / CIHT / CIWEM) advantageous.
- Experience in public realm, active travel, utilities coordination or major highways beneficial.
