Main Purpose of the Role
To carry out a full range of duties to ensure high standards of cleanliness, security, and maintenance across the premises. The role will be undertaken under the general supervision of the School Business Manager, Estates Manager, and Headteacher.
Main Responsibilities
- Security and Access: Act as the main key holder and be responsible for the security of the premises. Lock and unlock the premises outside of normal operating hours and set security alarm systems as required. Respond to security alarms or other call-outs in accordance with agreed procedures.
- Transport Duties: Act as the main driver for the staff and student shuttle service, operating three return services per day during term time. Undertake additional driving duties as required.
- Maintenance and Compliance: Carry out and record regular checks on play equipment, legionella risks, alarm systems, ladders, and fire extinguishers, reporting any issues identified. Identify and report defects relating to buildings, furniture, or fittings to senior staff and carry out remedial actions where appropriate. Arrange emergency repairs and obtain contractor quotations when required. Undertake a range of handyperson duties not requiring a qualified craftsperson, including minor repairs, painting and decorating, plumbing fixes, and installation of fixtures such as shelves or notice boards. Escort contractors on site, monitoring the safety and quality of their work.
- Facilities and Resource Management: Monitor fuel, electricity, and water usage and take meter readings. Order, receive, store, and distribute goods, equipment, and cleaning materials safely and appropriately. Ensure staff and pupil toilet facilities are fully operational and adequately stocked with consumables. Deal with blocked toilets and drains.
- Grounds and External Areas: Maintain the general tidiness and safety of all external areas, including keeping drains clear, ensuring safe pedestrian access at all times, clearing leaves, moss, and debris from paths, yards, steps, and entrances, gritting and snow clearance during severe weather, treating car park and playground areas with salt or grit, keeping signage clean and free from algae, and checking trees for broken or overhanging branches that may pose a risk.
- Cleaning and Porterage: Arrange for the collection and disposal of waste. Clean designated internal and external areas according to agreed schedules. Power wash classroom and dining room chairs at least once per year. Set up and clear away furniture for events, clubs, and activities, and carry out general porterage as required.
- Health and Safety: Comply with Health and Safety at Work regulations and COSHH requirements. Take reasonable care for personal safety and that of others, including adherence to lone working procedures. Cooperate with management to ensure health and safety responsibilities are met. Identify and report hazards promptly, escalating serious risks immediately to senior staff.
- Resources and Equipment: Use manual and powered tools, cleaning machinery, and chemicals safely and appropriately. Training will be provided where necessary. Seek opportunities to introduce resources that enhance cleanliness and the condition of the premises. Operate security alarm and CCTV systems; training will be provided if required.
- Knowledge and Skills: Willingness to undertake training, including off-site courses and meetings, to fulfil the role effectively.
- Supervision and Management: Work independently without direct supervision at times, including during holiday periods, following lone working guidance. Supervise and oversee the work of cleaning staff.
- Key Contacts and Relationships: Maintain daily contact with the Headteacher or nominated senior staff. Build positive working relationships with colleagues and respond positively to reasonable requests for support. Be flexible when required to work beyond normal hours in return for overtime or time off in lieu (e.g. events, open days, performances).
- Physical Requirements: Some lifting is required. Routine cleaning duties may involve moving and handling equipment, machinery, and furniture.
