About the role
Perspectum is seeking a Systems Engineer to join the team responsible for the Cloud platform on which all of Perspectum's services are built. This encompasses an AWS Organization of approximately 100 accounts: the infrastructure on which our services run, the systems that build, test and deploy them, and the security and resilience practices that support them.
This role offers a high degree of ownership and autonomy. We are looking for a proactive engineer: someone who identifies problems and acts on them without waiting to be asked, who works well from goals rather than detailed task lists, and who enjoys the breadth of a generalist role covering infrastructure, delivery, security and operations. You will own defined areas of our AWS estate end-to-end, making architecture decisions and implementing them, and will provide guidance to engineers and teams across the company on their AWS approach.
Perspectum builds medical imaging solutions that help diagnose and manage organ disease. The platform this role operates underpins diagnostic and research services that clinicians and patients depend on.
Duties and responsibilities
- Build, operate and improve the AWS infrastructure on which Perspectum's services run, and the source control, build and deployment systems through which they are delivered
- Own areas of a multi-account AWS Organization end-to-end, from architecture decision to implementation
- Support engineers in platform and technology choices, and advise teams across the company on their AWS approach
- Ensure production and development environments remain secure - including patch management, auditing and access control - as appropriate for our regulated medical industry, guided by standards such as the CIS benchmarks
- Investigate and resolve operational and security incidents
- Participate in our on-call rota (interruptions are very rare, and the scope of out-of-hours work is very limited due to the regulated nature of our work)
Technology and ways of working
- Cloud Infrastructure: A wide variety of AWS services managed across a multi-account (~100) Organization. Some of the services we use heavily: ECS, EC2, RDS/Aurora, DynamoDB, Lambda, S3. Preferring managed AWS services where possible - e.g. ECS over EC2
- Programming: In terms of programming languages across our wider engineering department, we use a lot of Python and C++ (for desktop applications) and JavaScript
- Delivery / Management: CI/CD style pipelines for testing and deployment. Automated security scanning and alerting
AI is central to how we work: the team uses Claude and Claude Code daily - writing code, setting up infrastructure, analysing logs, and investigating errors and incidents.
Person specification
We value proactivity and ownership above raw technical depth, and we do not require deep expertise in every area. We are looking for a broad generalist with solid end-to-end fundamentals: someone who, told that "the site is slow", knows where to start looking - client, network, load balancer, application, database - and how to narrow the problem down, without necessarily being an expert in each individual layer. An interest in exploring new tools and technology, combined with sound judgement about what belongs in production, is a strong indicator of fit for this team.
We are looking for someone with:
- A proactive, self-starting approach - you identify problems and act on them without waiting to be asked
- The confidence to contribute actively to technical discussion and to challenge ideas
- First-class written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain your thinking to technical and non-technical audiences alike
- The ability to work well both independently and as part of a small, collaborative team
- A genuine appetite for AI-assisted ways of working
- Practical experience of cloud platforms, ideally AWS, in a production context - whether from an operations, platform or development background
- The ability to solve problems efficiently with Python, or an equivalent language from which you can transfer quickly
You do not need to meet every one of these criteria to apply: we care more about how you work than about the exact shape of your CV.
