About the role

We are recruiting for an Electronic Engineer to join a long-established scientific manufacturing business. The role focuses on designing the next generation of specialist research instruments while also supporting existing products used by universities and research organisations worldwide.

This opportunity would suit an Electronics Design Engineer, Embedded Systems Engineer, Hardware Engineer, Instrumentation Engineer, or R&D Engineer looking for a varied hands-on development role within a small, collaborative engineering team.

What you'll do

  • Design and develop new scientific instruments from concept through to production
  • Support and improve existing electronic and embedded systems products
  • Work with analogue and digital electronics, A to D conversion, and serial interfaces
  • Contribute to embedded software development and debugging, primarily in C
  • Assist with mechanical and whole-instrument design considerations
  • Learn and apply infrared measurement techniques, optics, and low-pressure gas systems
  • Provide occasional technical support input for long-life products used in research environments
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, production, and service teams

What we're looking for

  • At least two years' experience in electronic product design or development engineering
  • Understanding of analogue circuitry, A to D converters, and embedded systems
  • Familiarity with interfaces such as I2C, SPI, USB, or RS232
  • Experience writing and debugging software, ideally in C
  • Broad engineering mindset with willingness to work across disciplines
  • UK residency

Nice to have

  • Degree or qualification in electronics, physics, engineering, or another STEM subject
  • Knowledge of DSP techniques or embedded FORTH language
  • Understanding of infrared sensing, optics, or gas measurement systems
  • Appreciation of mechanical design within complete instruments
  • Experience in scientific instrumentation, laboratory equipment, or precision devices

Who might suit this role

This role may suit someone early to mid-career in electronics or embedded engineering who enjoys practical development work and learning new technologies. It could also appeal to engineers from instrumentation, medical devices, laboratory equipment, environmental monitoring, or other precision manufacturing sectors seeking a stable long-term product environment.

The ideal candidate will be curious, adaptable, and comfortable working across electronics, software, and mechanical aspects of product development within a small specialist company.

Why join

  • Established UK manufacturer exporting globally
  • Varied engineering role with real product ownership
  • 37-hour week with early Friday finish
  • 25 days holiday plus statutory leave and pension
  • Free on-site parking
  • Employee Ownership Trust with potential tax-free bonus up to £3
