My client, a leading recycled metal trading group, is seeking an experienced Yard Manager to lead their newly opened yard based in Birmingham to success. The group is a large exporter of ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals through its trading entities. This yard will initially focus on non-ferrous metals (NFE) and will later expand into both a non-ferrous and ferrous yard, with plans to add a shredder.
This role brings an exciting opportunity for a yard manager to use their experience to start their own yard from the ground up, being a key player in the success of the site and the company. You will take ownership of all aspects of establishing a functioning and well-managed site including:
- Overseeing policy relating to health and safety
- Taking ownership of viewing new machinery and making recommendations on the best machinery to buy for the yard
- Overseeing other team members such as machine operators
The ideal candidate should have:
- A minimum of 4 years’ experience as a Yard Manager within the metal recycling industry
- Certification and experience in machine operation and people management
- IOSH or NEBOSH certification – managing safely for metal recycling
- Certification to operate 360 Crane (grab and magnet, wheeled or tracked), FLT, Cherry Picker, Telehandler
- Demonstrated knowledge operating a weighbridge and understanding the “in and out” process
- Extensive knowledge on paperwork procedures for loading out and incoming loads, including knowledge regarding safety, for example Sealed Containers
- Ability to manage a team of at least 10 team members, including machine operators, buyers and weighbridge operators
- Strong knowledge around Health and Safety, able to effectively develop safe working procedures and complete risk assessments
- Demonstrated ability to deal with customer queries, resolve site issues etc.
- Knowledge of environmental health guidelines for metal recycling sites
- Understanding of machinery safety requirements, including annual inspections and defect reporting and repair
- Able to form solid relationships with vendors and repairers alike to obtain the best services for the yard at the best prices
- Previous experience as a yard manager with a shredder would be highly desirable
