What is the role?
Persimmon require an Indirect Tax Technical & Advisory Specialist to provide authoritative VAT and indirect tax expertise, acting as the in-house technical reference point, ensuring robust VAT and other compliance, supporting project and assurance work, and contributing to training and succession development.
What you’ll do as an Indirect Tax Technical & Advisory Specialist:
- Act as the primary contact for complex VAT technical queries across the Group by providing expert advice, ensuring consistent and accurate tax treatment.
- Provide written research and analysis on VAT and SDLT queries, including land taxes (PX exemptions, land sub-sales) across England, Scotland, and Wales by interpreting legislation and guidance, supporting informed decision-making.
- Review Group VAT returns prepared by the Junior Technical & Process Support using analytical review and sampling techniques, ensuring accuracy and identifying potential issues.
- Conduct site and desktop compliance reviews across all tax areas, with a focus on VAT-sensitive topics such as non-deductible VAT, golden brick, and entertaining to assess risk and improve controls, enhancing overall compliance.
- Advise on the tax implications of new projects, including expense system pilots, payrolling of benefits, and system integrations by evaluating tax impacts, ensuring compliant and efficient implementation.
- Contribute VAT expertise to wider initiatives such as land remediation and R&D projects by collaborating with project teams, maximising tax efficiency and relief opportunities.
- Support VAT automation initiatives by validating consolidated return outputs and system processes, ensuring accuracy and improving efficiency.
- Deliver VAT and land-related training to accountants, land directors, and construction directors by designing and facilitating sessions, building internal tax capability.
- Coach and develop the Junior Technical & Process Support role through mentoring and technical support, building internal succession and strengthening VAT expertise.
What experience do I need?
- Newly qualified CTA, ACA, or equivalent, with a focus on indirect tax.
- Strong working knowledge of VAT and SDLT, including experience preparing and/or reviewing VAT returns.
- Responds positively to change and is comfortable working in dynamic environments.
- Capable of independently researching complex VAT, land, and other tax issues, and presenting findings clearly and confidently.
- Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to draft clear and concise technical memos and correspondence.
- Highly analytical with a strong focus on accuracy and attention to detail.
- A confident self-starter who takes ownership and drives tasks forward.
- Flexible and willing to support ad hoc business projects as required.
