We are seeking a highly organised and detail-oriented Custom & Excise Compliance Specialist - UK to support operations across our 26 UK sites. The role is essential in supporting the efficient production, holding and movement of goods within, into and out of the UK, while maintaining full compliance with UK customs and excise regulations. The successful candidate will oversee customs and excise documentation, provide technical guidance on trade compliance and ensure all goods are processed in accordance with UK legislation. The role involves close collaboration with internal teams and external stakeholders to uphold the highest standards of regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day operational support to colleagues on EMCS and CDS related queries.
- Liaise with internal departments, freight agents, and external stakeholders, including HMRC, to resolve clearance issues.
- Ensure import and export documentation complies with current UK customs regulations, excise legislation and international trade requirements.
- Monitor submissions for EMCS and CDS and ensure deadlines and procedural requirements are met.
- Collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders to resolve issues and support business objectives.
- Maintain and update internal customs and trade compliance policies, SOPs, and training programmes ensuring internal policies and procedures are compliant with customs and excise regulations.
- Support internal compliance checks, audits, and reporting activities to maintain relationships with regulatory authorities including HMRC and Border Force.
- Investigate potential non-compliance issues and liaise with HMRC Large Business Service (LBS) where required for reporting non-compliance.
- Provide technical advice on import and export queries including tariff classification, licence requirements and rules of origin/preference.
- Support the management and maintenance of HMRC approvals including APPA, SDVS, AEO and CSE.
Professional Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years’ experience of excise, customs and international trade compliance.
- Practical experience working with CDS and EMCS systems.
- Strong understanding of UK customs and excise regulations and global trade compliance requirements.
- Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and support operational demands.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with high level of accuracy and attention to detail when working with data and documentation.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to liaise with internal and external stakeholders.
- Pre-emptive approach to compliance, continuous improvement and issue resolution.
- Proactive, detail-oriented, and confident working independently or in cross-functional teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams).
- Knowledge of HMRC processes including Drawback, C1602 and C81 procedures.
- Qualification/Certification in international trade, logistics, supply chain, or customs compliance.
- Experience working with excise goods, bonded warehouses, or within excise regulated sectors (e.g. alcohol).
