Role Overview: We are seeking an experienced Cloud Operations Engineer to support, operate, and continuously improve our hybrid cloud, mission critical platforms. This role acts as a Level 2/3 escalation point for complex infrastructure, platform, and connectivity issues, working closely with Support, Engineering, and Product teams. The Cloud Ops Engineer is responsible for the reliability, availability, performance, and security of production environments spanning public cloud (AWS and Azure) and integrated on premise systems. The role focuses on operating and evolving hybrid cloud architectures, while driving automation, infrastructure standardisation, and modernisation initiatives within high availability, compliance driven systems. This is a hands-on role suited to someone with strong experience across hybrid cloud infrastructure, networking, Windows and Linux systems, automation, and monitoring, who is comfortable owning complex operational challenges end‑to-end.
Key Responsibilities:
- Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure Operations: Operate and maintain hybrid cloud environments across AWS, Azure, and on premise integrations, ensuring high availability, performance, and security. Provision, configure, and manage cloud and hybrid resources including compute, storage, networking, load balancing, identity, and database services. Support secure connectivity between cloud platforms, on premise systems, and edge or customer managed environments.
- Incident Management & Escalation: Act as Level 2/3 escalation for complex hybrid infrastructure and platform incidents. Diagnose issues across application, operating system, database, network, and connectivity layers. Lead root cause analysis and partner with engineering teams to implement preventative improvements.
- Reliability, Monitoring & Maintenance: Design, implement, and maintain monitoring, alerting, and logging across hybrid environments to proactively identify issues. Perform patching, upgrades, and scheduled maintenance across cloud and on premise components with minimal service disruption. Support disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution, including hybrid DR strategies and RTO/RPO alignment.
- Infrastructure as Code & Automation: Build and maintain hybrid cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or equivalent). Develop automation using PowerShell and Python to reduce manual effort and configuration drift. Contribute to CI/CD pipelines supporting infrastructure, platform, and application deployments.
- Networking & Connectivity: Troubleshoot complex networking issues including DNS, routing, firewalls, NAT, VPNs, and secure site to site connectivity. Work directly with internal teams and customer IT departments to resolve hybrid connectivity and integration issues.
- Platform Improvement & Documentation: Maintain operational runbooks, hybrid architecture diagrams, and support documentation. Identify opportunities to improve platform resilience, scalability, and operational efficiency. Contribute to hybrid cloud standards, patterns, and operational best practices.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Experience & Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience. Minimum of 5 years’ experience operating and supporting cloud or hybrid cloud infrastructure in production environments.
- Cloud & Hybrid Infrastructure: Strong hands on experience with AWS (EC2, VPC, ALB, IAM, RDS, S3, monitoring services). Working knowledge of Azure services and hybrid cloud architectures. Proven experience supporting high availability, SLA driven hybrid platforms.
- Operating Systems & Platforms: Strong administration and troubleshooting experience with Windows Server. Working knowledge of Linux (Ubuntu and/or RHEL). Ability to troubleshoot database backed systems (SQL Server or equivalent).
- Automation & IaC: PowerShell proficiency for operational automation. Experience using Terraform or similar Infrastructure as Code tooling. Scripting experience with Python is highly regarded.
- Networking & Security: Strong understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, routing, firewalls, NAT, and VPNs. Experience operating secure hybrid cloud environments using IAM, RBAC, and encryption. Comfortable working in compliance and availability focused environments.
Desirable Experience:
- Containerised platforms (Docker, Kubernetes) within hybrid environments.
- CI/CD tooling such as Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions.
- Monitoring platforms such as CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, Prometheus, or Grafana.
- Supporting AI, data intensive, GPU enabled, or edge integrated workloads.
- Experience with multiregional and geographically distributed hybrid systems.
What We Offer: A critical role supporting and evolving hybrid cloud, mission critical platforms. Exposure to modern cloud, automation, and reliability engineering practices. Manchester based role with direct influence over platform stability and evolution. Opportunity to shape hybrid cloud architecture and operational standards.
