Purpose
The Director R&D Material Characterization (Mat Char) will be responsible for globally overseeing the research and development activities of a multidisciplinary team focused on Infrared (IR), Ultraviolet (UV), and Thermal analysis technologies. This role is critical in driving innovation, product development, and advancing our solutions in the field of Material Characterization.
Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute a comprehensive R&D strategy to advance PerkinElmer's leadership in Material Characterization through IR, UV, and Thermal technologies.
- Team Management: Lead, mentor, and manage a team of scientists, engineers, and researchers to drive innovation and ensure the successful development of new products and technologies.
- Product Development: Oversee the entire product development lifecycle, from concept to commercialization, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, innovative products that meet customer needs.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including leadership within the Analytical and Customer Enablement Global Business Line (GBL) and the Production and Quality Global Support Service (GSS) organizations to help define product roadmaps and drive successful product launches.
- Research Excellence: Foster a culture of research excellence, promoting the generation of intellectual property, patents, and publications, and staying abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies.
- Resource Management: Manage R&D budgets, allocate resources effectively, and optimize the use of funds to ensure timely project completion.
- Quality Assurance: Ensure that R&D processes and products meet the highest quality and regulatory standards.
- Customer Engagement: Collaborate with customers and key opinion leaders to understand their needs, gather feedback, and tailor product development accordingly.
- Production support: Collaborate with production to qualify new parts and vendors for sustaining activities and alternative sourcing.
Basic Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field with a strong emphasis on IR, UV, and Thermal spectroscopy.
- Minimum 10 years industrial experience in R&D.
- Proven leadership experience in R&D, ideally within the analytical instrumentation industry.
Preferred Characteristics
- In-depth knowledge of IR, UV, and Thermal spectroscopy techniques and instrumentation.
- Experience of product development from concept to shipping within a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with internal and external stakeholders.
- Strategic thinking and the ability to translate vision into actionable plans.
- General knowledge of firmware/software and how it interacts with the hardware in an instrument.
- Good knowledge of physics – (Heat transfer and behaviour of materials at different temperatures, Optics, Basic electronics principles, control systems, noise, and signal processing).
- Familiarity with materials and manufacturing processes.
- Familiarity in reviewing designs and defining technical approach.
- Familiarity with value engineering, cost reduction and how to improve total cost of goods (TCOGS).
