Responsibilities include performing routine calibration/verification checks on a range of laboratory equipment such as pH meters and balances, setting up and operating a wide range of standard lab equipment, preparing aliquots and labelling a variety of buffers and reagents, and preparing QC standards. You will prepare materials and equipment for use, undertake in-lab tasks for scientific staff to agreed protocols (e.g., radioactive and environmental monitoring, routine equipment checks, and distribution of analytical or biological samples), and clean and disinfect lab equipment such as incubators, hoods, and safety cabinets.
Maintaining lab stocks such as consumables and solvents is essential, as is operating to approved quality standards (e.g., GLP/GMP). You will maintain QA systems by keeping accurate records of work undertaken, methods used, and results achieved, ensuring the safe operation of any equipment used (e.g., balances, pH meters, fume cupboards). Compliance with all relevant working instructions, SOPs, and safety instructions is required.
You will be responsible for maintaining a tidy and efficient laboratory environment and for ensuring health, safety, and compliance standards are met and maintained at all times. Liaising with customer groups to discuss their requirements, agreeing protocols for new tasks, and escalating to the Line Manager as required is part of the role. Planning your own daily tasks and ensuring timely and accurate reporting of data, including performance metrics, is also expected.
Qualifications include a science background with qualifications to at least 'A' level standard or equivalent (grade C or higher) in a relevant scientific subject. Experience of working in a laboratory environment would be an advantage. A good understanding of COSHH and GXP, along with a strong customer focus, self-motivation, and the ability to motivate others is important. You should have the ability to work on your own initiative and experience in working to technical procedures (SOPs, INSs, and Work Instructions) and safety-related documents (Risk Assessments). Being highly computer literate and possessing good written and oral communication skills is essential.
