We are acting on behalf of a well-established legal practice seeking an experienced Costs Draftsman to join their specialist costs team. This role offers the opportunity to work on a diverse range of costs matters across multiple departments, supporting the firm’s commitment to accurate, efficient and compliant costs management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed and accurate Bills of Costs, Costs Budgets, Points of Reply, Points of Dispute, and Schedules of Costs.
  • Manage a varied caseload of costs files from instruction to settlement or detailed assessment.
  • Draft and negotiate costs for a wide range of matters including litigation, personal injury, clinical negligence, commercial disputes and other civil cases.
  • Undertake comprehensive file reviews to assess recoverable costs, disbursements and proportionality.
  • Liaise confidently with fee earners, external solicitors, counsel and costs specialists.
  • Prepare and assist with advocacy for detailed assessment hearings where required.
  • Ensure all work is completed in accordance with CPR guidelines, court deadlines and internal compliance standards.
  • Update case management systems, maintain clear records, and manage time effectively.
  • Support the wider costs team with complex matters, queries and best practice guidance.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Proven experience as a Costs Draftsman / Costs Lawyer within a legal environment.
  • Strong knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules, costs case law, and the detailed assessment process.
  • Ability to prepare Bills of Costs and Costs Budgets to a high standard with excellent attention to detail.
  • Confident in negotiating settlements and handling disputes.
  • Excellent written communication and analytical skills.
  • Strong IT skills, including experience using costs drafting software (e.g. Caselines, CostsMaster, ACL).
  • Ability to manage your own caseload independently while meeting tight deadlines.
  • Professional, organised and committed to delivering high-quality work.
