The role:

As Head of PMO, you will provide strategic leadership across the portfolio, ensuring robust governance, effective planning, and strong delivery confidence. You will oversee performance, risk, and financial management, while enabling business readiness and benefits realisation. The role also includes leading the development and assurance of business cases and supporting senior stakeholders in decision-making.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the establishment and continuous improvement of PMO governance, frameworks, and assurance processes across the portfolio.
  • Oversee the development, assurance, and maintenance of business cases, ensuring alignment to strategic priorities and value for money.
  • Provide strategic oversight of portfolio performance, including progress tracking, financial management, and delivery confidence.
  • Direct the identification, management, and escalation of risks, issues, assumptions, and dependencies, including those of a sensitive or strategic nature.
  • Lead portfolio-level planning, scheduling, and resource management to ensure effective coordination and delivery across multiple programmes.
  • Drive benefits realisation by ensuring clear definition, tracking, and delivery of outcomes set out in business cases.
  • Establish and maintain effective stakeholder engagement strategies, building strong and collaborative relationships at senior levels.
  • Ensure robust change control processes are in place, managing impacts on scope, cost, and timelines across the portfolio.
  • Provide leadership and direction to PMO and project teams, setting clear vision, priorities, and standards for delivery.
  • Support organisational readiness for change, ensuring successful implementation and adoption of programme outcomes.

Skills & Experience:

You will have the following skills or proven experience:

  • Strong leadership experience within a PMO, portfolio, or programme environment, ideally at a senior level.
  • Expertise in governance, assurance, and delivery frameworks (e.g. MSP, PRINCE2, Agile).
  • Proven experience in business case development and assurance within complex environments.
  • Strong commercial, financial, and procurement awareness, including budgeting and cost control.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage portfolio performance, including planning, scheduling, and resource allocation.
  • Extensive experience in risk, issue, and dependency management at a strategic level.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and advise senior leaders.
  • Experience leading business change, implementation, and benefits realisation.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Track record of driving continuous improvement within PMO functions.
