Percona is an open source company, not a company that happens to use open source. We build in the open, our community is a real stakeholder, and transparency is how we operate. The person in this seat needs to be wired that way.
Percona sells support, services, and expertise alongside our open source distributions for PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, and MariaDB. We also build Percona Monitoring and Management (PMM), a cross-database observability platform. This role is responsible for product marketing across that portfolio, with an initial focus on PostgreSQL and PMM. We’re a small team where everyone covers for each other when priorities shift. The right person thinks in use cases and buyer needs, not just product features.
You do not need to come from a product marketing background. If you’ve done technical content, developer relations, solutions engineering, or technical writing in the database or infrastructure space, and you can translate complex technology into clear messaging, we want to hear from you.
What Will You Do:
- Initial focus (PostgreSQL + PMM): Messaging and positioning for Percona's PostgreSQL portfolio: Percona Distribution for PostgreSQL, Percona Operator for PostgreSQL (Kubernetes), and PostgreSQL-specific use-case packaging (AI Readiness, Migration, Performance Optimization, Cost Optimization).
- Percona Monitoring and Management (PMM): a cross-database observability platform. You’ll own PMM positioning broadly and drive messaging that works across PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MongoDB users.
- Competitive positioning for PostgreSQL (EDB, Crunchy Data, cloud-native Postgres services, emerging players) and for PMM against database observability alternatives.
- Partner with Services and Consulting so your messaging connects to the support, consulting, and managed services that customers actually buy alongside the software.
- Contribute to launches, enablement, and messaging that span multiple database technologies.
- Build and maintain competitive landscapes for your primary areas, and contribute to the broader Percona competitive view.
- Own launch plans for releases, features, extensions, and service offerings in your areas.
- Build sales and CS enablement: competitive comparison docs, pitch decks, one-pagers, FAQ docs, and other materials that connect technology to the use cases buyers care about.
- Drive customer evidence: case studies, testimonials, and proof points, including services and support engagements.
- Coordinate with Product on roadmap inputs for your portfolio areas.
- Track ecosystem trends across your portfolio areas (community surveys, conferences, mailing lists, analyst reports).
- Translate VOC from support, consulting, and sales into positioning updates and product feedback.
- Engage with the open source database community; represent Percona's perspective at events and in public content.
What Have You Done:
- Must-haves:
- Technical foundation. Comfortable in technical conversations about databases, infrastructure, and operations. Can learn complex technology quickly and translate it into clear messaging.
- Strong communicator. Can write for technical buyers (DBAs, SREs, platform engineers) and economic buyers (VP Eng, CTO, CISO). Clear and concise internally too.
- Stakeholder skills. Builds trust across Product, Engineering, Sales, and Services. Responsive, organized, follows through.
- Open source mindset. Understands transparent work, respects community, positions open source honestly. Has worked in or engaged with open source in some meaningful way.
- Connection to the space. Has worked in databases, infrastructure, developer tools, or a related technical domain. Does not need to have been a PMM.
- Adaptable. Willing to work across multiple database technologies when the team needs it.
- 3+ years in a technical marketing, developer relations, solutions engineering, technical writing, or product marketing role. (The specific title matters less than what you’ve done.)
- Strong signals:
- Understanding of open source business models (community vs. commercial vs. managed service).
- Experience creating competitive comparison content, especially against proprietary or cloud-managed incumbents.
- Working knowledge of PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, or other database technologies (or demonstrated ability to ramp quickly).
- Understanding of use cases that drive database buyers: migrations, performance, AI workloads, cost optimization, compliance.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes-based database operations.
- Background in security/compliance positioning.
- Engagement with open source or database communities.
Location: Remote (EMEA or Americas preferred, for core-hours overlap with the team)
Reports to: Director of Solutions Marketing
Occasional travel (3-6 events/year) for database community conferences, partner meetings, and internal offsites (e.g., PGConf, KubeCon, Percona Live).
