Plans and implements the educational program for children birth to 21 years of age. Performs related work as requested.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF CLASS

Under the direct supervision of the Education Coordinator an employee in this class is responsible for the following:

§ Planning and implementing an educational program for children birth to 21 years of age

§ Alerting the Education Coordinator to any specific needs of individual students

§ Acting in the capacity of a case manager

§ Ensuring the safety and well being of the students

§ Communicating in a professional manner

§ Responsibilities and duties may be changed, added or deleted at any time

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

Performance of the following tasks may place you at risk for acquiring Hepatitis B Virus

§ Prepare and implement age-appropriate curriculum to maintain, improve and or enhance the educational functioning of the students

§ Maintain daily lesson plans, data records and attendance

§ Develop reports on each student’s individual progress, implementing goals and objectives

§ Responsible for periodic evaluations and updates, prepares reports and portfolio assessments for all annual review and requested review meetings.

§ Attends to the physical needs of the students including but not limited to feeding, toileting, diapering and positioning

§ Records all meetings with team members and responsible for the case management notes

§ Integrates interdisciplinary objectives and strategies in the classroom

§ Attends staff meetings and a minimum of 15 hours staff development training annually

§ Oversees teacher assistants, aides, substitutes and volunteers

§ Maintains an orderly classroom, follows health safety and sanitation procedures

§ Willingly accepts additional related responsibilities

§ Positions and transfers students as necessary

§ Maintains records as required by regulations and in keeping with agency standards

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

§ Knowledge and understanding of the causes and effects of developmental disabilities

§ Ability to implement appropriate educational activities for students birth to 21 years of age

§ Ability to plan and carry out a daily routine, to include both group and individual instruction

§ Capability to exercise good judgment

§ Required to carry, transfer and position students, which entails bending, lifting and moving the students necessitating the use of proper body mechanics and transfer techniques

§ Ability to administer educational evaluations and screenings

§ Computer literate and good organizational skills

§ Knowledge of proper body mechanics and lifting techniques

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

· Candidate must possess a valid NYS Driver’s License at the time of hire, must maintain the NYS license for the duration of employment, and if they were to drive their own vehicle on Agency business, adhere to the Agency Fleet Safety Driver’s Policy/Procedures.

· Documentation of a current Mantoux tuberculosis test must be provided prior to beginning employment and annually thereafter.

· A candidate for this position is considered to have regular and substantial unsupervised or unrestricted physical contact with consumers and must undergo a criminal background check prior to assuming their job responsibilities.

· A minimum of 15 hours of staff development training is required annually.

· As part of an ongoing agency initiative, AHRC Suffolk has partnered with CQL to perform Personal Outcome conversations with the men and women we support. As part of this initiative, all staff may be required to complete training in order to contribute as interviewers, as follow-up staff, and/or as interpreters when interviews are being conducted.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • New York State Department of Education Provisional Certificate in Special Education
  • For SCIS and Day Care – NYS Department of Education Provisional Certificate in Early Childhood Education
  • Valid New State Drivers License
