The Role
Are you passionate about sustainability and skilled in waste management? We are looking for a Waste Management Instructor to lead the prison\’s waste services, supporting environmental goals like increasing recycling rates, eliminating single-use plastics, and contributing to net zero targets.
This is an exciting opportunity to manage and motivate a team of prisoners while delivering formal training and qualifications in waste management, helping learners gain skills that can lead to employment in a growing green industry.
About the Role
You will oversee the collection, processing, and disposal of waste materials across the prison estate, ensuring compliance with health, safety, and security standards. You will manage stock and tools, coordinate with contractors, and participate in sustainability meetings.
Your leadership will foster a restorative, skills-focused environment, supporting prisoners through WAMITAB qualifications and meaningful, rehabilitative work.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and motivate a team of up to 35 prisoners delivering waste management services.
- Support the prison\’s environmental targets, including achieving 90% recycling rates and reducing plastics.
- Oversee formal WAMITAB training and skills development for prisoners.
- Manage waste collection, processing, disposal, and pest control activities.
- Maintain stock levels, inspect and document tool safety, and manage plant machinery.
- Liaise with contractors and escort technical personnel as required.
- Participate in recycling and waste efficiency meetings, providing operational updates.
- Ensure health, safety, security, and environmental compliance at all times.
- Support restorative practices to promote accountability and personal development.
- Respond to emergency tasks and maintain clear communications via radio net.
What We\’re Looking For
- Experience in waste management, recycling, or environmental sustainability.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Knowledge of health and safety legislation and compliance.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills, with security awareness in a custodial setting.
- Willingness to undertake WAMITAB training if not already qualified.
- Experience delivering vocational training or coaching is desirable.
- Understanding of restorative practices is advantageous.
- Previous prison or secure environment experience is beneficial but not essential.
