Were looking for a compassionate and motivated Learning Support Practitioner to join our Prison Education team. This is a rewarding opportunity to support learners with additional learning needs, helping them overcome barriers, build confidence, and achieve their potential.
Working alongside tutors and education staff, youll play an essential role in ensuring all learners receive tailored support to succeed in their studies and beyond.
What youll be doing
Learner Support & Engagement
- Build positive relationships with learners to understand their needs and support their learning journey
- Provide tailored, in-class or one-to-one support for learners with additional learning needs (ALN), including disabilities
- Inspire, motivate, and help learners develop confidence, independence, and self-advocacy skills
- Monitor learner wellbeing and check progress regularly through face-to-face reviews
Support Planning & Review
- Develop and maintain course-specific support plans aligned to the SEND graduated approach
- Review and update support plans regularly, including for learners transferring between establishments
- Use assessment tools (e.g. Do It Profiler) to inform tailored learning strategies
- Record and manage all support documentation accurately within MoJ systems
Collaboration & Inclusion
- Work closely with tutors, trainers, and prison teams to ensure effective support is in place
- Support a whole-prison approach to additional learning needs
- Engage with stakeholders such as healthcare teams and neurodiversity specialists
- Assist with reasonable adjustments for assessments where required
Environment & Compliance
- Maintain safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environments
- Ensure all work complies with prison security, safeguarding, and contractual requirements
- Support wider team delivery, including cover for student support roles as needed
- Contribute to achieving contractual targets and quality standards
What were looking for
Essential
- GCSE (or equivalent) Maths and English (Grade C or above)
- Experience supporting learners with SEND or additional learning needs
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to manage a caseload and maintain accurate records
- Knowledge of effective strategies for supporting ALN learners and SEND Code of Practice
- Organised, proactive, and able to work independently and as part of a team
- Good IT skills and administrative capability
- Passion for supporting learners to achieve and overcome barriers
Desirable
- Level 3 qualification in Supporting Individuals with Learning Disabilities (or willingness to achieve)
- Experience in prison or secure environments
- Awareness of OFSTED EIF
