Personal Assistant / Carer
Purpose of the job
We are looking for a Personal Assistant to provide companionship and person-centered support to a friendly, sociable gentleman living with Alzheimer’s disease, enabling him to remain active and independent and engaged in the activities he enjoys.
The successful Personal Assistant will build a trusting relationship with a gentleman who has a great sense of humour, enjoys a laugh, and doesn’t take anything seriously. He can occasionally be cheeky, so a confident, easy-going person who doesn’t take offence easily and can respond with warmth and good humour would be an ideal match.
The role focuses on supporting him to continue enjoying everyday life, including food preparation, gardening, watching football, spending time outdoors, and taking part in social and community Alzheimer’s friendly activities. He is very family-oriented and benefits from encouragement to maintain his daily routine, independence, and wellbeing.
This position would suit someone who is compassionate, patient and reliable. Experience supporting people living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia is an advantage as is Spanish-speaking skills, although they are not essential.
Hours and rate of Pay 16 hours per week Monday – Friday.to be shared between two Personal Assistants (further breakdown can be given upon request and will be discussed at interview)
£14.30 per hour
Main Duties • Provide companionship and consistent social interaction to support wellbeing
• Provide gentle prompting and support for personal care routines, including encouragement to maintain regular toilet breaks
• Meal preparation to ensure eats nutritional meals.
• Support medication prompts and reminders to ensure medications are taken as prescribed
• Engage in conversation and day-to-day activities in a positive and respectful manner
• Support participation in hobbies and interests including cooking, gardening, and social outings e.g. Alzheimer’s cafe/singing group
• Assist with meal preparation and shared cooking activities
• Support light household tasks through supervised, guided participation (e.g. tidying, cleaning, laundry), with the aim of promoting independence and maintaining routine
• Accompany to appointments, walks, and community or social activities
• Support in maintaining a structured and safe daily routine
• Provide gentle prompting, reassurance, and encouragement where required
• Observe and report any changes in mood, behaviour, or wellbeing to family members
The main duties identified in the job description are examples of the expectations required; there may be occasions where you are reasonably requested to provide additional activities to be undertaken inside or outside of the home.
Personal Assistant Specification
• Promote independence, dignity, and a person-centred approach at all times
• Be honest, trustworthy, and reliable.
• Needs to have a full clean driving license and access to own vehicle with business insurance
• Has experience supporting individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia (desirable)
• Is calm, patient, and able to respond appropriately to changing moods or behaviours
• Has a good sense of humour and is comfortable with a client who can be playful and occasionally cheeky
• Builds rapport easily and enjoys meaningful conversation and companionship
• Is reliable, trustworthy, and consistent in their approach
• Has Spanish language skills (desirable but not essential)
• Has a warm, friendly personality and enjoys being active and engaging in shared activities
• The post is subject to an enhanced DBS disclosure which will be funded through the employer.
