As a Senior OHL Design Engineer, you’ll take ownership of delivering high quality overhead line engineering solutions across a range of transmission and distribution projects.

  • Activities
  • Leading the design and development of OHL solutions from feasibility through to detailed design.
  • Producing and reviewing design calculations, drawings, models, and technical documentation in line with industry standards.
  • Acting as the technical lead on OHL projects, coordinating with internal teams, clients, and external stakeholders.
  • Ensuring designs meet safety, quality, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
  • Supporting project managers with programme planning, risk management, and progress reporting.
  • Providing mentorship, guidance, and technical oversight to junior engineers and designers.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement, innovation, and best practice development within the OHL discipline.
  • Take the lead on establishing an OHL design function within the team.
  • Providing Quality Assurance to all OHL designs produced by both internal and external resources.

Qualifications

You’ll bring strong technical expertise, a collaborative mindset, and a passion for delivering engineering excellence. Ideally, you will have:

  • Significant experience in overhead line design within the UK transmission or distribution sector.
  • Experience in carrying out conductor sag and tension calculations preferrable.
  • Strong understanding of OHL design standards, structural analysis, routing, foundations, and conductor systems.
  • Proficiency with industry design tools (e. g., PLS-CADD, PLS-Tower, PLS-Pole or equivalent).
  • A degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience working with both pole and tower systems from 11k V upwards.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to lead multidisciplinary design activities, as well as defining process and software requirements.
